Buddy of mine was there at opening, but he's not really a gear guy so I didn't get a detailed report. He did buy the KAB Souvenir VSP in picture 117, which is a special preamp for playing 78s. The RTR looks to be a Tandberg 64.

I'm pretty sure they are Valencias. Wonder what they sold for.
On Edit: They are close to me, I called and asked about the price. Fridays price was $2000.00 and today's price is $1400.00. I told them "Good Luck"

I suspect that by the end of the day someone will get them for under a thousand. Not a big market for large vintage speakers. At least not outside of guys like us.

If owner of estate is smart and still alive he/she should hold onto them if buyers offer less than 1,000! Let see what 1,000 buys in speakers today Kef LS50! I wonder how these 50yr old speakers sound next to made in china british speakers?? Theyre in great shape and would do 2,000 or so on that auction site...

You might be right. I sold my flamenco for $850 locally in NYC. Valencias should not far from it.

You are right, a friend just got them. That curved front threw me off. Twin 414Z for the low end, 806 and 811 for the upper end. Nice speakers.

Nope, it wasn't me, I'm out of room.
Bowtie, I figured 902 drivers would help. The crossovers I'm unsure of what to suggest. Do you know what's in there now? With the twin 414Z drivers I don't think the Model 19 crossover would work.

Pretty sure they will have some iteration of an N800. I would expect that little can filled with goo like you find in a 9844 or 846A.

If the factory parallel wiring of the woofers is followed, you have an ~8 ohm load there, if the 16 ohm 806 is replaced with an 8 ohm 902, a Z-19 or model 19 XO could be plugged right in. If the 16 ohm HF is retained, some component values would need to be changed in either network.

They have the N-800F crossovers. Bill has already advised me about the optimal Altec upgrades. Unfortunately he did not offer to give me his incredible crossovers. He didn't even offer to build me a pair of my own. So whatever modifications I do will likely take a little time. I'll probably start by making sure I don't have any of the Altec goop drip that some 414z drivers are known to experience.

I needed these like a hole in the head, but I never really played with any of the bigger Altec offerings, the cabinets are stunning (I don't think there is a single nick or blemish anywhere on the fragile wood grilles), and the price was incredible. I also picked up a Hickok 6000, nearly 800 LPs (lots of classical imports, numerous audiophile test records, even a nice smattering of old jazz) and a beautiful old (empty) console that has sadly already succumbed to the elements. But the story behind that loss is also a story of saving the Malibus.

I picked up the gear at the end of the estate sale. As a last second purchase - the deal was confirmed by phone during the twenty minutes of the sale - I needed to quickly rent a U-Haul trailer to transport everything. Knowing that bad weather was coming I got an enclosed trailer. The good news was that my local U-Haul had one available. The bad news was that when the storm hit the trailer roof leaked badly . It water damaged one entire side of the empty console. But I lucked out in placing the console (and not the speakers) on the side of the trailer that leaked. The Malibus were spared a similar cosmetic destruction.
