Went on a McIntosh Tube buying spree

Fast996

Mod that Vintage Gear
Roughly 56 years ago I lusted for Mac tube gear . This year I decided to gather up a nice fm tuner MR71 , am - fm tuner MR66 , FM receiver MAC1500 and a preamplifier the C20 . My Knight KB85’s will do right now for amplifiers .
My hope is to find a pair of MC60’s.
I can see why McIntosh gear has gone sky high first of all tech shops love to work on them. Second there drop dead gorgeous. The sound it’s McIntosh if you like that.
Personally I’m tired of buying stuff that I can’t get fixed if it blows up.

I rebuilt my own McIntosh tube amps. Its really a pleasure to work on something that well designed. The sound is amazing and having totally rebuilt them, boards and all gave me skills and ideas I can use on my custom builds, and diy stuff. I guess what I'm trying to say is I understand why the techs don't mind working on em.

Congrats on the mr71 .Although i dont have the mc30 amplifiers or the Mx110 i use to have im hanging onto my mr71.Amps and preamps may come and go around here but i tend to hang onto the tuners of the various matching gear that has come and gone.

I now have a small fleet of Mac tuners MR78,71,and 66. The 78 I puchased new IIRC in the late 1970's. So they join my Sequerra,10B and my Dynaco FM-3 modified. I have loved tuners since I was a kid...something so beautiful about the sound of good FM.

Hi Radio,
It has the PEC boards and some caps and resistors changed as per Larry Epperson. I have another that I plan to do the same and also the power supply. Visit the Dynaco Designs page and he sells the kits...pretty reasonable and there is a big difference
that I can tell from mine and my stock one. Another thing I learned was that the mid to late units are best ( round domed IF transformers) some had all flat tops which were from the FM-1 see attached photos of the PCB's

Larry is a little slow to respond, but give him time and he will get the order processed.

I sent my C20 preamp to Audio Classics today for a restoration ect.
Seems like they are the top tier if you want your unit to sound original. Any thoughts?
