Were the Beatles that good or did they have help?

....and their legacy is what? The Crystals?

American pop music was for the most part, garbage, in the early 1960s.

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to?

My Boyfriend's Back?

Leader of the Pack?

Are you *R(* *$Y(*$Y *(Y(*#QYR(* (*#Y U(*YY%($Y&! kidding me?

"I Want to Hold Your Hand" is what the Beatles were doing comparatively. Mersey Pop vs. Philly Pop, both equally entertaining and vapid.

Bob Dylan changed all that, which is why Lennon and McCartney idolized him.

And the backing musicians:

The Hit Factory
The Wrecking Crew
The Funk Brothers

:thmbsp:

That's what prompted my original question. It's hard to believe how much came together with and for the Beatles. At so many points it could have fallen apart.

Yes shacky, business was different back then. You make a good point. All the house bands, and what about the house writers too? Holland/Dozier/Holland, Hayes/Porter, Lieber/Stoller and on and on and on...

But you're right about the stars lining up for The Beatles. Just the way that they came together with Sir George is uncanny. The rate of development was staggering - some bands might not achieve that in 20 years let alone a handful.

There's nothing about The Beatles that isn't remarkable is there? Interestingly enough shacky, they were in discussions to record at Stax Records. Don't quote me, but I think it was for the Rubber Soul sessions. Anyhow it obviously fell through but imagine how that would have turned out? There's a great Beatles tribute album called Stax Does The Beatles which has some amazing performances. Frankly, Otis Redding does Daytripper 20 times better than The Beatles ever did - a perfect interpretation, like the song was wrote for him. Yes had they gone to Stax to record the course of rock history may have entirely changed. Someone should write a fiction on the topic...

The voices of reason...

correct. They were copying American R&B acts

maybe to you, but not to the "invaders". Read a little, they were often embarrassed with their efforts...The Kinks, Stones, Who often said how weak their covers were. I liked them anyway. In a punk kinda way.

Thanks guys...

Man I totally took the bait, this guy is a world class troll. Sorry shacky, didn't mean to flame things. I'm out...

The Beatles were diamonds in the ocean of crap that was the sixties. I lived through the sixties, and hated most of the period.

Suffice it to say that the Beatles' success was no accident.

Dylan?

:lmao:

Regardless of what your thoughts are on the matter, The Beatles--"diamonds in the ocean of crap," according to you--idolized that "hack." One could argue that if it weren't for Dylan, the Beatles would have still been stuck holding girls' hands and loving me do.

I doubt that very much. The Beatles didn't need any Dylans to inspire them. They found inspiration everywhere. That's what artists do.

A lot of things came together for the Beatles, but their talent and hard work were necessary components. They put in enormous amounts of time and effort, far beyond what others did.

Oh, this is just grand. I want to see their timecards, and those of other artists. You know, so we can compare hours logged toward effort. That way we can have empirical evidence.

Well, read The Black Swan for starters.

The harder you work, the luckier you get.

What in God's name does The Black Swan have to do with The Beatles? I wasn't questioning the relationship between work and luck. I was questioning your empirical evidence to support the claim that the Beatles worked harder than anyone. Not a theory. Empirical evidence. Unless you were there calculating the amount of hours they and others put in--checking their "timecards"--it's all conjecture on your part.
