Hi all - Ive been trolling around for awhile and this is my first time posting.

I picked up a console stereo on Craigslist and I'm hoping to get it in working order. I have no experience with electronics or schematics.

When I bought it, the left speaker worked using the turntable, AM, and the RCA input. The audio is occasionally interrupted by a strange noise - sounds like a couple seconds of morse code to me.

I followed the recap tutorial on antiqueradio.org replacing the electrolytic and paper capacitors. I then had the tubes tested and replaced the bad ones. Well, except for the soldered tube.

FM now works in addition to the other inputs, but the right channel still isn't working at all. Since then I've found a couple of resistors slightly out of spec on the amp and replaced those as well.

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction for troubleshooting the right channel? I've attached some pre 'repair' photos and the schematic.

Some post-repair photos would probably be more helpful than pre-repair.

If you have a source that has its own volume control, like a phone or iPad or similar, I'd start by plugging it directly into the amp and seeing if both channels work. If they do, the problem is in the preamp section. If one channel is still out, the issue is in the amp section.

Once you've determined which section has the problem, start by measuring the good channel vs the bad.

I've got this exact same console! Just in a different cabinet. When I was restoring it I didn't get any sound from the speakers until I replaced the speaker capacitors. Did you replace those yet?

Thanks artsybob! Do you know how to access the underside of the control knobs? I havent been able to figure that out to test those parts. I havent replaced speaker capacitors, but if I plug the left speaker wires into the right speaker it works ok.

I've got this exact same console! Just in a different cabinet. When I was restoring it I didn't get any sound from the speakers until I replaced the speaker capacitors. Did you replace those yet?

I have used my iphone with the "Tape In" via the RCA inputs on the back of the cabinet. I get the same results there. Do you mean I should plug the iPhone into the RCA plug on the top of the amp? I was thinking those were the left and right outputs which might tell you something about how well I understand the schematic.

If you know how to use a meter, just test around until the signal or voltage stops. I know this amp is one of those weird single ended push pull jobbers that inverts the signal if you were to be using it as a stand alone amp but since you have the entire console, it shouldn't be a problem except being able to find out why the right speaker doesn't work. You can easily check the right speaker output transformer with a meter.

Yes, for testing purposes, you can use the RCA inputs on the top of the amp with your iphone.

Does the tuner dial face and knobs look like the ones on my stereo console? What I did in order to get the tuner/pre-amp unit out I first took all the knobs off, removed all the wires that connect the tuner/preamp to the antenna, amp and record changer, took out the screws in the L-bracket that holds up the tuner from the bottom, and took out the screw that goes into the tuner from the back of the console, and then I jiggled the tuner/pre-amp unit out. If your console has the same tuner/pre-amp unit as mine, and if it hasn't been serviced before, it will take a bit of strength to jiggle it out because of age and the degraded rubber gasket placed btw the tuner and the tuner faceplate. After you've serviced the tuner section, I've found it easier to get the unit back in after flipping the console frame upside-down bc it goes back in there kind of awkwardly and it's almost impossible for me to put it back in right-side up. I hope this helps

a couple of easy tests before we get too deep into this

try the phone directly into the amp like @FlaCharlie suggests. This will be the connections inside the cabinet on the amplifier chassis itself, looks like a red and a black plug in the pics.

If thats a no-go, try switching the speaker wires side to side to see if sound comes out of the other set of speakers, or if it remains on the same side.

basically we're trying to determine if the amplifier itself works, and that both sets of speakers work. Currently there are 3 broad possibilities, the preamp has a dead channel, the power amp has a dead channel, or one set of speakers is dead. Need to know where to start looking so this can be fixed.
