Wharfedale Denton 80th Anniversary, a non-professional review

They're calling your name, Derek :D

Hey, regarding color... I came across this picture in a review on hifipig.com. This is one the shots that had me thinking they came in several different finishes (I want the finish that's shown in that group of pictures I posted several pages ago).

only Mahogany Red - must be a lighting issue with that picture.

Yeah, that's what I figured, but I wanted to be sure. That picture makes it look like that burgundy color they use for their Jade series models.

Just ironing out some small details, but everything looks good. Already have the money part sorted out. Just trying to work out which METHOD of payment I'll be using before I actually pull the trigger. It's doin' though. Party's still on. Operation Dinner Out is still a go. ;)

Don't lean on that iron too hard, or the sale may be gone. Aren't I a bad influence? :D

I listened to the Denton's for 7 hours straight this past Saturday.

And to think they'll just keep getting better and better as time goes on.

I was thinking of getting a used pair of Sonus Faber Minuettos for about the same price but now I'm thinking of going with these instead. :scratch2:

The only thing I had to say to my wife "Look I sold those big ugly speakers and got cute little ones!" :D

My last purchase, it was the wife that pushed and I was the reticent one :D

:scratch2:

Well, now THAT'S one you hold onto... There's no such acronym as WCF (wife confirmation factor), mainly because it rarely happens... Maybe people can call it WEF (wife enabling factor).

Enough slobbering, you guys! :D

I just pulled the trigger too (peer pressure is a bad, err, glorious thing) so I expect they'll be here Friday.

Woot!

Wouldn't surprise me if you got them tomorrow. I ordered last Friday afternoon, had them Saturday afternoon

EV's are a little bigger and we in SE MI seem to be a fickle lot.

Tell me about it! It took me a month and some change to finally get rid of my Klipsch Fortes chock full of Bob Crites goodness. The asking price was less than eBay, and about right in line with the other pairs that were on CL at the time ($500). I had a fellow come from Holly to buy them.

Well, the gushingly enthusiastic comments (and thoughtful review above) piqued my interest, the veneer/finish is eye catching for sure, and having my head wrenched open lately to the reality that my beloved little listening hovel is really best suited for smaller speakers, I decided these were worth more than just a listen.

The Hi-Fi World review suggests that the nominal 6 Ohm impedance is actually a bit high, as the low freq. driver is a 4 Ohm unit and below 500 Hz the speaker behaves like a 4 Ohm speaker. I've been smitten with a couple of little Magnavox console-pull amps that I've rebuilt and modified and darn it, they sound real good. But the output transformers (such that they are) are fixed for the old 4 Ohm console systems. I've read so much about (and experienced for myself) the benefits of trying to make the impedances match that I tend to pay a little more attention to 4 Ohm speakers (or those reasonably close) that come across the radar. The 86 dB sensitivity of these would suggest that a low-power console amp isn't a great mate, but I'm thinking these might eventually end up on my desk and near-field doesn't need power, so it might actually be a good fit. Besides, I've got the big ARC-welder amp in the music library for real listening. :)

I think you will like them, Don. They are a fun listen, and very smooth sounding. You may want to try them in your larger room with the bigger amp, because they can get really loud without sounding strained ;)

Been digging online, and thankfully, SoundApproach in Virginia has them as well, and for the same price and free shipping that Music Direct offers, so maybe I should go through them (Being in CT, I'll likely get them quicker out of Virginia than I would if they were being shipped from Chi-Town, right?). Is SoundApproach a reputable, trustworthy company? I know more about MD, but I've heard the SoundApproach name tossed around quite a bit on various forum threads.

The important thing is, there should be enough to go around, at least as far as this thread's concerned.

Question regarding impedance "dips"... Do the most-extreme dips occur at the highest volumes, or is it simply a case of the frequencies being thrown at it and NOT a case of how much you turn them up?

It's the frequencies and not the volume itself. Highest impedance is usually at the woofers resonant frequency (Fs) and at the upper end of the treble, while the bigger dips are usually in the upper bass lower mid area, going by the charts I've looked at anyway.

Yeah, that's great. I hope we BOTH end up loving them. The used price for these will be high once they've been unavailable for a while.

I love the idea that they're bi-ampable. I'm thinking Fisher 800C for the top and a solid-state model for the bass. Can you bi-amp with a two receivers? I've never bi-amped anything before, and I bet there's a lot of potential in those things. I was thinking maybe I could ultimately use my 2000x or 4000 for the bottom end, since it would be 9 to 15 more watts than the Fisher. I should get the 4000 back up to speed when I have the money.
