I just snagged theses.

They are the old 2 ways with square magnets on the woofers.

They have the soft/full switch on binding panel instead of an Lpad, Should I consider modding the circuit to use an Lpad instead?

They sound good but there are a couple of things I want to do.

Not the least of which is replace the grill cloth, recap (using KBG pio caps) , and check the condition of the drivers to see if they need to be refoamed.

I'm certain they are loaded from the rear.

Any tips for removing the badges from the front so they can be reapplied?

I would assume the front baffle can be removed from the rear, am I correct in thinking that? Any tips on accomplishing that?

Any tips on sourcing material to refoam the speakers if necessary.

those look like early w60s, gangtwanger can tell you for sure

probably have cloth surrounds, so no refoaming needed. you can tell if the back comes off as there will be screws all around the back. with my early w70s the baffle is pretty securely attached to the cabinet so would be very hard to change out the grill cloth. on the later w60s (i have w60e) the grill is attached with magnets and comes off easily.
 
Definitely W60's. The smaller hole on the right is the port, and they do indeed open from the back. You won't need a re-foam kit as the speakers have cloth suspension which should not rot or perish.
I have the same pair, but in much rougher shape. Still sound good though.

Be careful when removing the back as the X-over is attached to the inside of the back panel and there is not much slack in the wiring to the drivers.

Those look great! Are you moving forward with the recap? I'd be curious to hear how they compare to those EMI's - I almost picked up a pair of them a while back at an estate sale but resisted the temptation. Of course now I kick myself for not grabbing them! :tears:

I think so I believe I can combine 2 6uF 400v KBG pio caps in series to get to the 12uF I need.


I'm liking these better than the EMIs especially for vocals.

You need to wire them in parallel to use 2 6mfd caps inlieu of a single 12 mfd.

Flip the one on the right over. Badges should be on the same side :yes:
The badges should have a small nut on the inside of the cab to remove them.
Grill cloth is not hard to find (just google grill cloth) but it can be $$$$$.
I used burlap from Michaels craft store.
Mine did not have that cross bar so I can't help with removal.

Yes I wired 3 KGB PIO 8uf caps in parallel to reach the 24uf I needed for my w90s. They are amazing caps and will really improve the sound! Glad to hear they're better than the EMI's - now I feel a bit better about passing on them. Nice PRS BTW - McCarty?

I recapped my W70E's with big 6uF KBG oil caps for the tweeters and some 25uF electrolytics for the mids (stopgap until I find something better).

Sounds really good, but haven't had too much time with them yet.
 
Hey, new to this site and so happy to see that there's a section dedicated to the Wharfies! I've been in conflict with the wifey who has wanted to turf them for the past ten years. She says the are too big.:(

The Warfedales are 12" from the '70's in the company of Philips mids and with newer tweeters from the states (silk formatted). The enclosure that houses these vintage speakers, save the tweeters was my home made effort made with one inch MDF...which you can no longer buy! The shape of the enclosures were made for a corner install, and stand about 4 ft tall. To the wife they are behemoths.

The source of sound is the QUAD 33 PRE-AMP, coupled with the QUAD 405. The sound is clean, tight and can punch out anything from "Moody Blues" to "Black Sabbeth" without taking a breath.

Sorry for being so...verbose, but the warfs stay!

Just tell her you joined a group and tell her the truth, there are guys here where 4' speakers are too small to even consider giving space in a 2nd system. My wife lived with 6 6' tall panels, 5' speakers and a number of speakers reaching 4+ feet tall. Also, the 405 to many is only powerful enough for mini monitors and not real systems. The 33 preamp likewise is almost bandaid box size compare with many of our preamps. She is.lucky you have been so conservative in having such a small system.

I am sure we could help as a group in spec'ing out something more appropriate such as

Bozak Concert Grand with bi-amp crossovers and a set of JansZen I30 tweeter arrays
2 McIntosh MC2600s, or 4 Marantz 9s or 4 McIntosh MC3500s amps
Sansui CA5000 Preamp
Sequerra Day tuner
Marantz SLT12 turntable
Studer or Crown reel to reel deck, maybe 2 for dubbing.

FYI in this thread.........Wharfdale's do not like Yamaha amplification:yuck:. My W60's sound great on the baby Marantz (2015), NOT on my Yamaha gear.
When I get my CR-420 up and running I will try the W60's on that receiver and see how it sounds. But for now they stay on the 2015.
 
Pacific EVO 20,s. Just recently fell in love with some Monitor audio Gx 200's and if I had had the extra coin in my pocket, they would have come home with me. I have been going to audio shops lately, thinking of upgrading my speakers, I'm not very BRAND knowledgeable on equipment , just listen to everything they have. I have been surprised to find that I invariably pick British made speakers as my favorites. Things that make you say...hummm.
 
1963 wharfedale W90

SPEAKERS IN NEED OF RESTORATION. THEY WORK PRETTY WELL AS IS .i USE THEM WITH VARIOUS TUBE SETUPS. THEY ARE FIRST GENERATION I THINK DATES TO 63
