Wharfedale w45 and Kenwood KR 6050. To many watts for these speakers?

The ringing and/or oscillations from driving square (well, sorta square) waves into a tuned LCR circuit will tend to be quite energetic, odd-order harmonics, and at very high frequencies. Some of the best sounding systems are the most vulnerable. AR-9s (one example) are notoriously fragile when powered by an amplifier driven into clipping.

Hey All,

Hope you are are safe during these troubling times. I have a Kenwood KR 6050, and I'm looking at getting a pair of Wharfedale w45's. I'm intrigued by the wharfedale sound...but am concerned that I may drive them to hard with my Kenwood. It isn't a monster, obviously, but it does put out 60 watts/channel. I've read that these Wharfedale's don't like more than 20.

I'm stoked to hear Arethra, Etta, Little Richard, etc, through these, but am worried that if I put on some Zep or something modern like the Black Keys, or Alabama Shakes, and push it to hard, I might blow a speaker. Anyone think this is a valid concern, or do you think this pairing would be okay?

Thanks and really hoping everyone out there is staying safe.

-Aaron

Of course you can use this receiver with W45s. Just exercise some care with the volume control and make sure uninitiated family members don't touch it. If you really want some protection for the speakers, fuse them. Get a pair of AGC in line glass fuseholders. They are all over ebay. Takes a 1.25 inch long x .25 inch diameter glass fuse. Get some 3/4 amp, 1 amp and 1.25 amp fast blow AGC fuses. Also ebay or parts express. Put one wire end of the holder on the positive wire to each speaker. Other end of the holder goes on the positive speaker terminal. Experiment with max volume starting with 3/4 amp. If these blow too low, go up in amperage until you reach your comfortable highest volume without blowing. You can also get higher amperages, but then you negate the protection. I think these amps might be good choices for your W45s. Good luck.
