Wharfedale W60 red dot

Hi, and thanks in advance for any input. I have had a pair of two-way Wharfedale W60s for a few months and assumed the tiny, faded, almost invisible red dot on the left terminal (a small, nonstandard banana plug) indicated positive. But from looking at photos of what must be later models with screw terminals (that someone had the bright idea to clearly mark with plus and minus signs) I see that negative seems to be on the left, as it usually is, and positive on the right. Does anyone know about these old Wharfedales with no positive or negative markings, just a washed out red dot? Thanks!

I don't know about your speakers in particular but I do know consistency is more important than color.

Hook your speakers to your amp, using whatever indicator you have, making sure you do it the same way for both speakers.

If you hook one speaker up in reverse you will hear a difference, your bass will go away and your image will shift to one side.

You can check the phase of your speakers with a AA battery. Connect one wire to each end of the battery observing the polarity of the battery. Positive on the battery to positive on the speaker will make the woofer cone move forward.

Thanks for those ideas, which reminded me that there is a "phase reverse" switch on the back of my amp. The difference is subtle but I think there is more bass with it off, meaning I guess that the red dot does mean positive.

I have my W30D/Super Lintons open at the moment and on them the Red Dot on them does indeed mark the + Terminal

Thanks for the reinforcement. On mine, it seems counterintuitive that the dot would be on the left, but then the Brits drive on the left too. I would love to hear those W30Ds of yours.

Unfortunately I had one open to see if it was just the capacitor that caused one of the tweeters to stop working. There don't seem to be any working Purple Tweeters about so it will be awhile before I can hear them again :(
