Wharfedale W60d Speakers

Any help appreciated. I have Wharfedale W60d speakers that I just aquired. One of them, both the mid and tweater is not working. Is this most likely the crossover? Also, how do I access them for removal? The cabinets are sand filled. I have no idea how to access them.

If memory serves, their should be screws on the back of the speakers. Remove the screws. What I did was leave 2 screws partly in and used them to pull the back off. Be careful because the wires attached to the back panel are short. It’s been a long time since I did this, so I may have mixed this up with another model of Wharfedales.

Look at page 53 I think it is. You will need to unscrew the sand filled backs and take them off. This will expose the rear of the drivers and crossovers. Recapping is easy. Read the values off of the cap and pick some up from Parts Express or like company. Also while your in there deoxit the pots, they are likely corroded. You can check the values on the speakers with a multi meter.

These are great speakers and worth saving. What do your cabinets look like?

Yes the wires are short. I cut mine and reinstalled some heavier gauge.
 
Only the back is sand filled on the ones built in England. The ones built by Radio People Ltd don't have sand filled backs. On most of these, the backs should be removable, but I have seen some that you have to go in from the front. The D models should have the purple tweeter which is prone to galvanic corrosion of the leads. They can be fixed but it is tricky. When you get to the drivers check continuity on the drivers that aren't working. If you get continuity then you probably have bad caps in the crossovers.
