Wharfedale W70d restoration

I think at some point I'll part out my W90's and stuff in drivers to my liking. I want treble, my wife wants bass, and my sons college fund wants the $$$ out of the "original Wharfedale" drivers.

You have the Radio People version, in your part of the world that's what I would expect. To save money, Wharfedale shipped the drivers to Hong Kong and a factory there built the cabs. There are small differences between the Hong Kong and England built models but they don't affect the sound. If the drivers are working I would clean the pots real good. Spray them with contact cleaner, make sure you get it inside the pot. Then operate them thru their full range about 20 times or so. Let them sit for a day or so then repeat the process. Check the tweeters for corrosion on the coil wires where they go under the plastic dome, they are prone to galvanic corrosion. One of mine was bad, they can be fixed, but it's a pain in the ass. I changed both of my tweeters out to some Polks I had laying around, they sound fine. If I ever find some Super 3s at a decent price I would like to try them. The only other thing to do besides whatever you need to do to the cabs is change out the caps. I strongly recommend using paper in oil caps. I tried Clarity PX film caps which I use in most speakers but I just didn't like the sound. I wound up using paper in oil caps on the recommendation of one of the AK members. I used Mundorf Evo Oil caps, they are a big improvement over the film caps.

I am looking for the specs on all 4 Wharfedale W70D speakers and the crossovers. I need to replace the upper bass / lower mid 8'' speakers. Voice coils is scratching against the magnet or iron. any or all info copies appreciated. I heard there was an engineer in Great Briton that kept all that info when plant was sold and all old stuff was discarded to this one man. His name and address would be awesome. I need to match the speaker specs for replacement. A re-coning knowledgeable source would be helpful too. Thanks! Send any info to newdave1 on this AK site

You might try rotating the 8s 180 degrees.

The winding has lifted off of the cylinder due to heat. very small gap between coil and magnet or iron. It's cooked. Thanks anyway. I need a recone or an efficient speaker that will handle more watts. I really need specs for another replacement taking a crapshoot that it will work. I have one in mind, for trail and error. (unless I have the specs on the original)l. Help any one!!!

Sorry to hear it. I dont have any info. I think those drivers were used in other models.

Unfortunately, the specifications you need to replace those drivers with new does not exist. Gotta find vintage replacements.

:yikes: I have a pair of W-90's that I recapped. I wouldn't think of gutting them.
Placement and room size is key with these. Move in and out from the speakers. Once you find the sweet spot highs and lows sound like they should. Get them off the floor about 4 to 6 inches and tilt them back a bit. And maybe toe them in a bit also.
