What’s the story on these AR11’s?

These don’t look like the AR11’s I’m used to. Are they reissues or fake? One has issues with popping noises at higher volumes. I tried to figure out how to open them up and work on the boards, but the cabinet doesn’t have any obvious way to access the inside. I have nothing in them, so I might just start cutting if no one knows a trick or something I’m missing. Grateful for any insight.

Awesome info. Thanks! The gray around the drivers in the pic you posted is all foam. Really stickey with age. It wont come off without destroying it. Is it possible to fabricate replacement foam? Hate to mess with it if I can’t replace it.

I have a pair that were new in the boxes a few years ago, a very decent speaker really. Like any that are reasonably designed when fed with quality components certainly sound good. Placement can be fun as the 8" side firing woofer can make getting accurate bass a bit more problematic, they definitely can use a larger room.

Keep the grills off as they are not exactly transparent and hinder the speaker's potential. When new I would think the foam like material could most likely be carefully pried away but deterioration with age probably makes that impossible. It is there to dampen certain frequencies. AR put some thought into this line and the drivers are quite good for the mid and tweeter.

Yep, the foam just crumbles away. I think I will just remove it as the only way I can see to access the interior is thru the speaker holes. I haven’t tried prying the bass cover off yet, that might be my best/largest point of entry. The speakers sound really good as is if kept below the volume where the popping noises start, so I’m in no real hurry to tear it down. I am using them as outdoor porch speakers at the moment, so volume isn’t a real issue in consideration of the neighbors. Lol

I also noticed the midrange surrounds will need replacing. I’m contemplating a total overhaul of these now, and a move inside as everything I’ve read is so positive about these.

I wonder what a recap could do - it would be nice if AR actually used air core inductors etc. but not likely, even expensive speakers tend to fail there, but you never know. Using subpar components that would not cost all that much more if they truly went for quality, it is amazing just how often this is done.

This line was not on the market for very long and never received that much exposure either which is unfortunate but then again, prices tend to be lower as well. I have owned a number of good speakers and continue to give these a listen which is saying something.

Do you know if there are schematics available for this? I see a lot for the old style, none for the Hires. I’m going to consult with a local repair shop for a rehab estimate. But I’m an avionics tech by trade if the recap job is outrageous. So not intimidated by solder. But a wiring diagram would add to my warm and fuzzies.
