What about LaserDisc?

Hi there,

Does anyone here on the forum has a LaserDisc-player?
I use a Pioneer CLD-2850 that has a "CD only" option.
Most of the time watching music video clips but it can be used as a regular cd-player too.

I think the quality of it's DAC is very good.
Better than most standard CD-players IMHO.
How do you maintain these devices and are there any upgrades on such units?

I have been often tempted to buy a laserdisc player and collect live performances. Also music vids. I use to have a couple years ago before they went belly up. I just think those machines require lots of service since there motors meed a powerful motor to spin the discs.

Many years ago I picked up a Pioneer DVL-700 at Goodwill for about $4. It plays cd's also, though I normally use my Philips CDB-630 for cd playing. Since I acquired the LD player I have manage to pick-up a great selection of laser disks, especially when they were lumped in with records at $0.99 a pop. I have owned the player for over 10 years and the only problem I have had was when the power section went out. I was able to purchase another machine cheaply and swapped the power section out. So in 10 years use only one problem.

Yep, I currently have 2 laser Disc players, and around 100 discs, that are residual purchases from the complete nineties decade, when they were the highest quality video picture viewing readily available, source disc transfer quality determined.

First Pioneer player I bought new in 1991 is the CLD-95, which sounded, and looked very good, both with laser discs, and the few times I played CDs in it using its internal DAC converter to L/R analog outputs into my living room`s HQ separates based HT system.

And my 2nd laser disc player purchase is a used off eBay about 6 yrs. ago is a in excellent condition Mc. MLD-7020 which is a rebadged Pioneer model modified and tweaked by McIntosh for their only laserdisc offering, and currently installed in my A/V rack, relegating the never been serviced and still perfectly performing when removed, previously used Pioneer CLD-95 to a storage closet..

Its A/V quality, both S-Video & Composite video output, is very good for the laserdiscs that I`ve played through it, especially connected to my Audio Classic purchased used Mc. AC3 RF demodulator for true surround capability performance when the laserdisc movie had the AC3 surround sound encoded in it..
Don`t recall if I ever tried playing a CD in it, though, as I still have a purchased new in 1987 Mc MCD 7007, or 3 OPPO universal players for that task, when desired.
