what are "kabuki speakers"???

Yeah, I am DOWN to about 12 pairs myself.

What did you finally wind up with, Maggies ?

I had 3A's, and Tympani 4a's too.
I liked the little SMG A's the very best.
Imaged all over, were efficient for Maggie's, warm, musical, and forgiving.

I like the sound of Maggies, I really do.

Tell me about your system ?

AR90's
Pioneer S-1010's - http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=77717&highlight=S-1010
Wharfedale W90's

are on my keep list. most of the others are headed out the door.

BTW AR90's are 5 driver 4 way speakers, Kabuki? :D The W90's are 6 driver 3 ways :D

No no - you don't understand - its all about hitting the right "price point" - then all the fanboys can go crazy!

Besides, with the serious lack of serious hi-fi chains, the limited number of audiophile shops, and the boom in Walmart and BB/CC type Home Theater surround systems, is it any wonder there are so place to even show or sell the kind of vintage gear many of us fell in love with in the 60s/70s/80s?

What store or who would be selling the big Altecs these days, JBL 250s, Sansuis or even the big Pioneer HPM speakers that have been under discussion lately? Magnolia seems stuck on Bose (there must be a good price break in those puppies, eh?) ...
Yes, we are dinosaurs it seems.
My own kid, who grew up around this stuff could care less.
In his new house, all speakers are built in.
He gave me BACK the Matrix 801's I bought for him!

Let's face it, we are just a bunch of old guys in a dying hobby.

My other hobby Ham Radio is dying too.

Welcome to 2007 ?

Wow !
The Pioneers are great speakers, real sleepers.

TRY running a pair of the same amps right behind the Maggies, as SHORT a cable as possible ?

I too like the MG 2's, all magnepan, no ribbon tweeter to call attention to itself with speed differences.

No HORNS ????

For ME, I must have efficiency, at least ONE efficient speaker around ?

I MIGHT get another set of Maggies.

I miss them, honestly I do.

I smoke cigarettes, and OTHER things

Electrostats are OUT for me.

Too bad, some Innersound are for sale locally ....

They gotta be interested Zilch, and do not seem to be ?

It is my belief that the NEXT generation of audiophiles will come from the Boom Boom Bass Kids of today.

Just like us Hams looked down on CB Radio, the CB'ers of yesterday grew up to be the hams of today!

I TRY and culiivate these children, and make audiophiles out of em.

There MUST be audiophiles for tomorrow.
After all, my heirs must have SOMEONE to sell all my crap to when I die, LOL

There are actually a few AKer's whom are very young and also very in tune with the good stuff. most of us are of an older demographic and have kids so they will get the benefit of our obsession and realize good audio because of it.

Kabuki Redux........

Howdy,
Yes, have grown children as old as 41 (gads!), and few are enthralled
with audio, in the sense 'we' are,....And yet occaisionally they will hear
a familiar tune played on 'real' equipment, and it makes them pause,"WOW",
doesn't sound like that on a i-pod"!....Yeah, no kidding, so perhaps they'll
come around eventually, and toss those tinny toys....."Hey dad, what's a
Sansui, tell me again about the 'myth' of Kabuki.........Cheers

Guys and GALs my friend - I'm a big fan of the sweet sounds of these dinosaurs.
Haven't done much with Ham gear since I sold my Hallicrafters HA85 in college - SWL, DXer - got into other pursuits ...

Leave gear for my heirs?? Let them earn their own way!
What was that line from Oceans 12 -
"the last check you write should be to the undertaker and it should bounce."

Yes, there will always be audiophiles, thank God.
I just think the Golden Days of Audio past us long ago, and we have been in decline ever since.
All the better for me.
More deals on unwanted stuff
It may be Trash to some, but it is Gold to me.

I'm "only" 34, I can remember listening to my parents music in the 70's when I was 6 or 7 years old, no modern gear sounds like that did, thats why i'm into vintage stuff, hopefully my 2 sons will also learn to appreciate it.

More drivers are not always a waste.
Let's get one thing clear....the Sansui's up to the 2500 series were great(maybe the 3500s too, though I never had any). After that, the woofers went up and up in size, and the cabinets turned to sh** for depth.

On many models, the clarity dials determined only the cripness of say one midrange speaker. The other was always dedicated, and remained constant despite switching of the knobs (Soft, neutral clear) This gave it a 4-way feel, and when listening to say hendrix or Zeppelin, the guitar can come alive. Therefore I must say, Sansui did have a purpose for 2 mids on at least SOME of their moels, and the later crap boxes gave them a bad name.

Listen to Jack Johnson on some sp-200 or sp-2500x, or sp-1700 (smaller mids, not quite the same)

The 2 tweeters help with dispersion, if you set your speakers at listening level like I do. It gives a larger sound field.
But if you place any speaker in a crappy room, it will suck. Period. So That is just my opinion from my couch :)

As for kabuki, try the "sansui sp-x5000.45GLX air cooled super speaker, with four 18" woofers, 73 mids and 4000 super tweeters. You'll love puttin em together!"
only 4 payments of $49 :)

...and here's one more slightly less active AK member who is also well outside of your demographic. :D

CS99's keep on appearing on ebay over here for some reason. It's one of the few Pioneer speakers I see for sale - mostly it's CS-series 80's BPC.

Hi all,

What do you get when your Sansui speakers have 24 woofers, 32 midranges, 52 tweeters capped off with 150 super-duper tweeters? You get Kabuki speakers. The more chrome rings and speaker drivers, the higher the Kabuki factor!

I see just about everyone thinks it is a bad thing.

I defined them as 5 or more drivers (multiple mids and tweeters) in a cabinet.

Often they have a "Vintage" sound and it isn't necessarily a bad thing. If that is what you like, FINE!

I had too much fun with them when they were new to EVER run them down.

Hi,

Not dissing the sound of Kabuki! They're fun and worthy of preservation. I saw a nice 4-way pair of Sansuis calling my name loudly.

Kabuki or JBL "Arrays?"

[Don McR will like this one.... :p: ]

I'd say if the manufacturer has labeled each driver with a purported function to prove it's not gratuitous, we're almost certainly talking Kabuki.

Aren't those JBL L880's? I've seen the called the best speakers under 1,000.00 in a couple of reviews. :scratch2:
