Yes there are alot of cliches
A lot of song writers use rhyming dictionaries.
Because there are only so many words that rhyme with love, hurt, sad, etc.
OH baby you gave me the blues down to my shoes ...
I should have know from the start you were bad news...
Blah.. blah ...blah.
Unfortunately the music business is very formulaic. Once something is successful they will run it into the ground.
But this is not anything new
If the Beatles work why not the Monkeeys,The Byrds. Hermits Hermits,The Turtles, The Yard Birds, The Animals.
It is why we have had disco, new wave, synth pop, hair bands, boy bands, corporate rock ,crossover country, grunge & now EDM.
Every song sounds the same until people get sick of it & move on to the next big thing that is then promptly run into the ground..
A lot of todays songs are built in the studio measure by measure track on top of track.
Poor musicianship is “Fixed in mix". Everything is recorded with click tracks ,drum loops ,virtual instruments with vocal and instrumental pitch correction on everything. Every note & beat is perfect yet lifeless and sterile.:thumbsdn:
One listen to modern pop, rock, hip hop or country and you will quickly hear a pattern. Producers & record labels encourage artist to be “commercial” and develop that “Hit or Radio sound” artists are discouraged from drifting to far from their “Signature sound"
The other thing that is hard not to do is to not repeat oneself or others.
The other night I was playing around with this great chord progression.
I was really excited until about 30 minuets of working on the “new song” I realized I was playing the Beatles “While My Guitar Gently Weeps in the “Wrong Key”. Damn George Harison beat me to it!:finger:
How many Bob Dylan, Neil Young & other great writers songs after a few albums all start to sound the same?
Songwriting is a craft & it is hard to do.
If you don’t think so try writing a good song yet alone a “Hit song” trust me it is not easy.
When I 1st started writing a very experienced song writer gave me this advise.
“Man everything great has already been said before....
So the trick is to find a new way to say the same old thing in a clever or in new way that is fresh & no one has heard before”
“When you figure out how to do that then you will be on your way to becoming a real song writer"....:thmbsp:
30 years later I am still working on it.
Cheers
