what are the nicest speakers you've seen in a random place?

The kind of speakers where you know somebody influenced a decision way out of what was needed.

I saw some Klipsch hanging in a ramshackle church in Tulsa OK,

My buddy told me of some Altec Lansings in a roller rink.

Second the Altec, but in an ice skating rink in the mid 80’s. Also some Sony APM’s in a camp dining hall kitchen.

There's a trendy spot in KC that has a coffee shop in it. In one of the rooms they set up a vintage rig. Middle of the road vintage Marantz, a Dual tt, and Dynaco a35 speakers. Pretty cool.

We've done this before, but always fun...

Spotted at the "Pioneer Village" on the Indiana State Fairgrounds (probably 10+ years ago). Yes, there were 2 of them.

The best I can come up with is the four pairs of Paradigm speakers in our local Hasting's before they closed down. I think they were Phantoms?

The biggest rinks need every bit of 10 Altec Voice Of The Theater. Usually four E/V's went in first, then the Altec's followed when the E/V didn't get it done.

We wound up with a pair of Klipschorns, from a fellow who used to own a night club in New York City. They were what was left, of a set of FOURTEEN K-horns.

Imagine how much output THAT had- FOURTEEN K-horns in one place. Each one on about 150 watts per speaker, as far as I could tell.

Unless I calculated something wrong- starting with 104dB sensitivity from one- if you stacked all fourteen in one big rectangular array- it should wind up up with a combined half-space sensitivity of close to 115dB at one watt. Then, add 2100 watts (150 watts times 14)- that's another 33dB louder than one watt.

That's close to a theoretical 148dB?!?!

Yes, I know there will be losses- but good grief- that setup probably could EASILY exceed 140dB, all over the room, if someone cared to crank it that loud...

Regards,
Gordon.

Was in a very small town in the Berkshires last year. Went into a high end craft/art store and they were playing blues through some Time Frames. I mentioned the cool factor of the speakers to the store manager...they had no clue.

I was in a used record shop in Westwood NJ a few months ago. There was a Sinatra album playing at a moderate volume level in the background and I suddenly realized how natural and great it sounded. I looked up to see a pair of AR-3a's on a wall shelf. Nice surprise!

Took a wine tour couple of years ago in Sonoma.

At one winery in the large warehouse tasting room in the back there was some 'gear' that caught my eye.

Obviously used for winery 'events', but it was some serious gear that look like it had been used..a lot.

A pair of Quad ESL 57's in a small coffee shop. I offered the owner a nice, attractive pair of conventional speakers and she was delighted — "Those old things are much too big, I can really use the space!" She was right: she put filled the space with plants, which gave a nicer atmosphere, and she only played low-level background music anyway.

Some YG Hailey's on Dan D'Agostino's shop floor...I know, not a random place at all but still...in the warehouse!

Okay, how about this: Some big Triangle floorstanders, I think they were Genese Lyrrs, in a pizza parlor. If was San Fran though, even hole in the wall coffee shops there have Klipsch Heresy's or other trendy vintage speakers.
