I know that are some very desirable Yamaha speakers but a lot of mediocre ones too. I alway pass on the Yamahas when I see them in the thrifts because I don't know which are the worthy models.

Can someone give me a TOP 5 LIST for Yamaha speakers?

Do they make enough worthy speakers to put together a TOP 10 LIST?

Thanks!

NS-10000
NS-2000
NS-1000/M
NS-690
NS-500M

Honorable mention:

NS-200M
NS-670
MSP3, MSP5, MSP7, MSP10

Dishonorable mention:

NS-10

Thanks guys...I have heard of the NS1000 but a lot of the models are new to me. I will have to do my research.

I see some disagreement as well. That is what makes a TOP 10 LIST fun and interesting! LOL

As far as I'm aware, the order goes

GF-1
FX-1
FX-3
NS-10000
NS-2000

Top 5 is therefore nearly impossible to get, although I recently acquired a pair of NS-2000s (pure Karma !! )
The order is therefore difficult. If you go somewhat by price alone, the order is as follows:

GF-1 , FX-1 , NS-10000, NS-2000, FX-3

Honorable mention goes to
NS-1000X
NS-1000 / NS-1000M

... then possibly the NS-10 / NS 690 , etc.

I have about ten pairs of Yamahas including the NS-570, NS-500M, NS-670, NS-50T, NS-A99, NS-10, NS-620, NS-820...
All are decent to excellent speakers in their own right.

The only pair never never ever leaving (ever) is the NS-40M.
Never.

NS-500M

Is this still the consensus from those in the know? I have NS690, some NS500m have come up nearby...i thought they were closer to the NS1000M than the 690? If they are likely to similar to the 690 i dont need them i guess.

In my opinion the NS500m is a better speaker than the 690. Actually their is two types of NS500's one is a two way and the other is a three way, I prefer the three way model, as it has a Be tweeter, looks very much like the NS1000m only the tweeter is a different model, and the mid range doesn't use a Be but rather a titanium driver and a lessor crossover. I don't care much for the two way version.

I think the active quad-amped GF-1 is probably my holy grail speaker.

I've been lucky enough to have the NS-1000, NS-690(I and MKII) and the NS-500m, all of which are fine speakers of audiophile quality.
I was able to A/B the NS-1000 and NS-690MKII side by side and found both to be equally wonderful with the NS-1000s having bit more midrange fullness and more detailed highs, ever so slightly more forward sound than the slightly warmer less detailed NS-690s.
As Ken says the NS-500m , which I just recently passed on to another music lover, is also in the same realm of goodness.
I still have the 690's and would still own the 1000's had not someone offered a gob of money for them.
