What are these "drum" speakers?

Anyone familier with these drum speakers? I think they sound pretty sweet and may use them with my tv. I opened them up and found a Foster tweeter and what looks like a C.T.S. woofer. Anyone know who made them? Thanks! :thmbsp:

I remember seeing those in furniture stores. I have no idea who made them, but I would guess they date from the 70's?

I have a pair similar to those. Mine are shorter. I rescued them from the trash many years ago on my way home from a prom. Yes me in a tux snagging speakers from the trash at who knows what time in the morning, heh heh. I don't remember what the drivers were that I took out of them just that they were not good sounding. I replaced them with some Pyle 5" Bullfrog monitor replacements and a pair of small tweeters I had laying around. I also dampened the cabinets more. They sound pretty good now. I was using them as the rear channels for my HT for years. Now they are collecting dust in the basement. I will try to get some pics when I get home.
I love the look, enjoy.

I bet Zenith, too. I see lots of the Electrohome ones on ebaY, but those inverted cones in the top make me think of Zenith and their "Circle of Sound" theme they had back then. I don't recall seeing the cones on the Electrohome ones.

What I DO remember about the Electrohome ones is the plugs they had on the wire. IIRC they were a simple three-prong one.

Electrohome used this type of speaker to give the impression of better seperation. Don't count on hearing much (if any) bass from them.

Zenith "Allegro"?, IIRC.

But RatShack's not out of the question.

I also bought a small pair that's similar to those, looked like some kind of lamp to me. Got them just because I hadn't seen anything quite like them before.

I remember those. But can only tell you that they are RCA, Magnavox, or some manufacturer similar.

I even heard them when new. Interesting, but didn't have enough bass for me when I was that young!

I am inclined to agree with those who think these are zenith. The Allegro series used tweeters just like this, and they used C.T.S. speakers in them as well. Funny how some people think the bass is bad, because that is what impressed me about these. The bass sounds deep and rich to my ears. I'm listening to them now with some latin percussion music and the bass is coming through quite nicely.

The Empire cylindrical speakers were of much more robust construction. Zenith had speakers that looked like that. The Zenith speakers tended to sound pretty decent, because they tended to use decent drivers (as already alluded to above).

Actually, there is an integrated Zenith reciever turntable on a cart down at the local salvation army with a pair of those speakers on each side. I vote Zenith.

I've got a pair -- they are Zeniths (though ElectroHome might have sold them in Canada. They have a 6 or 6 1/2 inch Utah full range in them firing up into the conical diffuser. They are better than they ought to be, withou being actually very good. I use them outside when I'm working.
Harmon Kardon sold a somewhat similar pair of omnis, but in a square box, and with a seperate tweeter firing up into a second conical diffuser flared into the bigger diffuser for the woofer. My memory is that the Zenith sounds better -- perhaps because at the low end of the market, simpler is usually better.

Hey I found a table top version of a zenith radio with the same inverted cone-shaped diffusers over the speakers. It was $5, so I bought it. It's just like this one. It's like a little baby console stereo. It sounds nice, but I dont' think it's worth anything. I don't know why I bought it. I guess I couldn't help myself. It's in perfect condition. I don't know what I'm going to do with it. Anybody want it?

I think the series was called 'Circle of Sound' or something like that.
