What are these JBL scoops worth?

I just scored the deal of a lifetime. Well I think so. Anyway I just bought a pair of scoop speakers with all old jbl parts. D130's, 1217-190 horns, LE 175 drivers, and N1200 crossovers. They are in a C34 kit cabinet. Not sure of the brand of the kit though. Anyway I have a pretty good Idea of what the components are worth alone but not for the whole set of speakers in the cabinets. I also have the paper work or everything and a warranty card. I think the components are worth around 1500+. Anyway any help would be great.
Thanks in advance

The components, if perfect, could bring maybe 1200 on a good day. The D130's are far from perfect.

Check completed ebay sales, all those components are in good supply and sell regularly.

A perfect pair of 1217/175 just sold for 559, very very nice pair of D130 sold for 400, and N1200's sell daily for 100-200/pr.

The cabinets will sadly only have value for someone looking to explore the obsolete technology of back loaded horns. At best, maybe an additional 100-200.

Just my .02.............................

Those appear to be JBL C-40 Harkness speakers. Totally cool.
When the OP mentioned "kit" and "unknown brand" i didn't really give the cabs a second look.

Now, after reading your post and going back for a close look at the cabs, i see the veneered front edge, looks like they're in walnut. I agree with you that they look genuine which puts a different spin on them.

I agree. I would love to find a pair of these someday!

Not sure why I wrote C34 cabinets, they are C40 kit cabinets(I believe). I have paperwork that shows how to put the C40 kit together, but no brand name on the paperwork. If they were bought from JBL they would be assembled not as a kit I assume. Is that true or could you buy them as a kit? There is no markings anywhere but on the components and no screens.

Those are C40's alright. Usually a factory 001 load had the following drivers: D-130A, 175DLH & N1200. (not D-130 shiney dome).

They may have been modded at one time. :scratch2:

I have a pair with the 001 load. The C34's had a corner cab. Those are lowboy C40's.

Are those 16 ohm?

It's important for values sake that the red wax seals are still in place on the 175's.

Both horn drivers and the d130's have 16 ohms on them, but the n1200 says nothing. Based on my research they are 16 ohms but these do not say it, unless its inside on the back. The N1200's are the spring loaded connections. They speakers are not here with me but I don't remember there being any holes for the metal legs to be attached. If they were OG they would have had the sought after legs????

One more thing. The C40 harkness's have a smooth scoop. Look at my picture again and the scoop is made of sections and not a continuous piece of wood like the c40 pictures show. I want them to be C40's but a few things tell me different.

Mine have screw connectors for the speakers. I'm not sure if they even made a 8 ohm N1200. Mine say it on the outside of them though. For reference here's how mine look from the front. These are all original never molested.

Mine have the threaded holes but came with the risers without legs.

The plywood baffle & back are not original on those. Mine are all MDF. Those might have had a single driver load in them & they installed a new back panel & front baffle to accommodate the added x-over and horn. You can see they stained the plywood. If the back was open we'd be able to compare the construction details.

The 50's cabinets were all plywood. In the early 60's they moved to MDF.

Uggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh I had a pair of Harkness when I was a teen. Neighbor gave them to me. Lugged them up my steps to my bedroom!!!
I moved out and my father broke up the cabs and the drivers were put under a bed. At some point those too met the maker. Gone gone gone gone!!!
If memory serves they ranked up there with the K-horn I owned.
You are a lucky dog.

Nifty find, downtownfish :thmbsp:

I've been casually looking for a pair of C34/C40 cabs for the longest time for testing and driver experimentation but never got too whipped up about it. Now, I believe I have a pair of Tannoy DC's coming and have thought that they may just prove interesting in a pair of these.

The search continues with new found vigor ;)

Tannoy had their own version of that, the non-corner GRF.

Yes they did, for 15" and Monitor Red 10 (Cornetta). Short of building them, I think the odds are better that a pair of C34/C40 cabs pop up close to me than the Tannoy's.

The Monitor Gold 10's I hope to see around here sooner or later are going to be just for a bit of fun. I'm not even sure their parameters will support horn loading really. There is not much in the way of tested parameters out there and what there is, seems to differ significantly from Tannoy's published parameters for the Gold 10. Not sure what I am going to end up with until they show up and I can actually test them. They may even end up in something small sealed or IB.

C34 or C40 cabs would be fun to play around with anyway . Obsolete Technology can be surprisingly satisfying ;)
