Hi everybody!

Here comes the flood

But before that, or if I find myself on a island with some spare electricity ;-)

What do you make of those styli I grabbed recently and got in mail today (the one outside the box came on Stanton 500 MkIII) ? Any data will be welcome!

PS: since I have two old and gold 500's is there a reason to keep the MkIII I got with the styli?

Wow, I didn't expect that! So in the Stanton sealed boxes there are Expert Stylus or Esoteric Sound made styli. Did I got it right? I probably won't keep all of 3 boxes but only one (or maybe two) since for the moment I don't have any of 78 RPM records. I do plan to get one Dual 1219 in the future though. Is there any clou to make me decide which of those (if any) should I keep? What those styli go for?

Unless you're an enthusiast of 78s, I would not be using those. Og Stanton styli are hens teeth. Get a cheap stylus and keep those for the archivists or pass them along.

I got your point, thanks. Since I'm going to follow your advice, do you happen to know what would be faire a price for them?
 
Nice specimens ! Definitely made for serious collectors and archivists.
2.0 was a 2 mil for the 2.3 mil Transcription discs. Very worn, early, 1 mil groove, LPs and 45s might also benefit from this (TE) Truncated Elliptical stylus.

3.0 mil is standard fare for 78s. The "c" indicates a Conical/Spherical tip.

3.5 mil is for worn 78s and possibly the Vertical Edison discs.

4.0mil is for worn Edison Verticals and very worn, normal, lateral 78s.

If these are by Expert Stylus, Ltd. of the UK, they will all have, expertly made, nude mounted, diamond tips. Thus, no bonding, brass or metallic agents, which held the diamond tip, while being cut (polished), before gluing to the cantilever.

Expert also marketed E Elliptical and TE types, Truncated Ellipticals...

If these were located stateside, I would be very interested to purchase.

When originally issued, back in the 1970s and 1980s, these were priced at $50. to $75. each....Resellers then raised those prices, plus, over time, inflation...

FYI...The original styli were sent, from the USA, initially, in their original, American cases. Expert Stylus, Ltd. in the UK, "retipped" and then sent the modified styli, in their original cases, to the collector/purchaser.

Of course I mostly use a 3 mil but experimentation is part of what makes the alchemy of 78 playback so special ... Enjoy!
