so at the local thrift store there were two speakers (with grills drywall screwed to wood). They were about 20 inches tall and had no name anywhere. peeled back grill and speakers have (from top to bottom) a woofer horn and tweeter. on back they only have one rca type jack for hookup. Weighed a lot more than i expected. any ideas?

That is a very nice rca jack. The thick cabinet walls bode well for what may reside within.

Does make you wonder though if they were an early powered monitor someone had at some point fixed up as well they could. If so what kind of amp was in those boxes?

I suspect they were just some speakers made by some local guy for some local stereo store. Back in the 50s through the 70s, cabinet build quality could be quite good even for store brand speakers, whereas drivers often were pricey (unlike the current situation where decent enclosure materials and shipping seem to be a problem and drivers are cheap).
So I wouldn't waste time worrying -- they were almost certainly cheapo speakers that allowed the store to sell a whole system cheap. They might be good or not so good, but their market value is negligible.
In some cases, not fair, but true.
