Photobucket and Firefox don't seem to love each other anymore so had to post these thumbnail..
I picked these speakers up at my local thrift $15.00 look like home brew or just old speakers.
I have no idea what this is compiled of but I do live in a town with eccentric scientist that build on a daily basis at the lab.
Wizzer cone speakers mounted on top don't know what's inside yet and some odd looking giant crossover or something inside each speaker.

I'm curious about what kind of driver is inside the cabinets? That top driver looks relatively cheap and the diffusion grille over it looks like it came off of a ceiling PA speaker housing or maybe even a heating/air conditioning vent! (lol). There might be enough copper in those inductors to recoup your investment at the local metals recycling center!
 
I wouldn't even know how to plug them in or if it's safe to do so.

When I first say them I thought they where some sort of mini Leslie cabinets..
Trust me she had all the right girl parts it was the brain that had the short in it.. But that was funny!!

Must be a home brew job, can't believe a company would use a ceiling A/C or heater vent as a grill cover.

The butt joints and random screw locations are quite convincing of that as well.

I want to say i have seen those crossovers before, but i just cannot place them.
 
Looks like they are powered speakers. Those vents are meant to dissipate a great amount of heat. At the very least you could use them for cooking breakfast.
 
! have to agree with bowtie.... So what are you waiting for?!?!?!?!?! Get the backs of those things and post us some pictures!
 
Your 1st girlfriend cost you much for the FIFTEEN DOLLARS and you will probably be happier when you pull the pantaloonies off these and see whats behind the curtain :)

Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting they ARE Western Electric so much as i am suggesting the designer/builder of these was heavily influenced by the early WE netwoks.

I could see them being someone's incarnation of an "improved" AR-1, striving for an omnidirectional pattern to the HF section, and using an extended range cone speaker for the HF element as the AR-1 did.

Just my .02............................
