The early metal trapes were hard on heads, primarily as the heads weren't as tough as they should have been and the tape particles were larger and less polished.
If you have Akai GX (glass crystal heads) or some of Hitachi's decks that used a polished titanium surface, you can use any tape with no wear whatsoever.
