What cartridge should I get for myb Thorens TD-145?

I've heard the M97xE on that arm - sounds pretty good. I like the Nagaoka MP-110 better. A 110 is the cart a friend has on his TD-160 (with the same tonearm as your 145). The 97xE and 110 are roughly the same price. There is/was an eBay vendor out of Japan that was selling the 110 for around $100.

I'll check that one out as well thanks!! Since I'm keeping the Technics SL-23 TT what is a good replacement stylus for the ADC-XLM-Mklll cart?

That's the heavier arm - the ADC (one of my favourits!) will be much too compliant.
Either a Grado, the Ortofon MS Red, or the M97 will work fine, and will be better than the one you have.

Having said that, 100$ carts are much too basic to do justice to this wonderful turntable.
My personal choice will be either a Grado, since you can upgrade it later with a 8MZ needle (150$), or keep the cart you have, and save enough money for a Denon DL110.

Hi,

Yes its the heavier arm.

The XLM won't work in it, especially on a suspended turntable.

This is the ideal match :
http://www.lpgear.com/product/LPGAT95VL.html

The tip is way better than the suggested ellipticals,
and it will last far longer before needing replacement.
Track at 2g, record wear will be lower than 1g ellipticals.

I agree most $100 cartridges aren't really good enough, but
this one is, and its an ideal compliance match to the arm.

rgds, sreten.

Some may note I'm a big fan of the AT95VL for heavier
arms, that it because IMO its the no brainer best choice.

I have a Thorens TD-125 MkII with the same arm (TP-16 MkI) as your TD-145. It has a moving mass of 16.5 grams. It is classified as a "medium mass" arm, though on the heavier side for a medium mass.

I have tried the following cartridges on my TP-16 MKI arm with success, with an improvement in sound quality with each as I went up the "ladder": Shure M97xE (brush in down position), Audio Technica AT-7V, Denon DL-110 (high output moving coil), Denon DL-103 (low output moving coil). I really like the DL-110. I love the DL-103, as it fits with the other components in that system about as perfectly as I can imagine.

I have not heard the M97xE and Nagaoka MP-110 in a side by side comparison but with a limited budget, and as I mentioned before, I'd go with the MP-110. That said, as long as you get a properly made and mounted stylus on the M97xE (Shure has at times had quality control issues), the Shure is a solid option also.

You may want to read over the long AK thread on the various conical cartridges that Shure offers though. Heck, if you've got the time, do an internet search on any/all of the carts that have been recommended - you might be surprised at just how much info is available.

Good luck with your choice.

I'm going with the Shure M97XE, the local audio store is checking to see if he can get one and the price. I know I can get one online but I want him to setup the TT as well, so I figure may as well buy it from him as well!!

Hello Folks!

Glad I stumbled into this thread, was wondering, I have a Thorens TD 145, any recommendation for a very good Stylus (needle) for the TD 145? Would be very much appreciated. I got someone who suggested me this one https://www.maddison.ca/mad-000583.html but not sure, I know the TD 145 id a good or very good TTable and I want to give it justice not go with a stylus that might not give justice to the turntable.

Any feedback input or links is welcome.

Happy New Year 2020 to All of Health and in Music ;-)

Best,
OK, that's just the stylus (aftermarket) replacement for the Shure V15 Type III. You need the cartridge (body and stylus) and that one would be wrong if you have the same tonearm as the OP- TP16 MkI @ 16.5 gms. The V15 Type III was intended for much lighter arms.
Having not used, but, much recommended would be the Audio Technica VM95E, or some variant thereof.
Also a Grado (Blue, Green?) should work on your arm. And you will see suggestions for the Denon DL-110 (HOMC-High Output Moving Coil).
And there's much love for the Nagaoka MP-110. These are all under $200 new and easy to find.
If you are willing to spend more, your options increase. Looking for used/vintage, the sky's the limit.
I'm sure some will come along and offer their opinions.
You could start looking at those in the meantime.

Hello @ctjetta

Much thanks for taking the time to reply. Thats what I was worrying that (stylus) would be not a good fit or just an aftermarket. And since yesterday I kept my eyes on the MP-110 that I found here on Amazon

https://www.amazon.ca/NAGAOKA-MM-MP-Cartridge-MP-110/dp/B002SDU67Y

So this is the cartridge and the stylus together at this price for the MP-110??

If so I think i'll be buying this one hahaahaa

Thanks a bunch for the input ;-)

That's a fine choice.
As an FYI- A "cartridge" usually refers to the body and stylus assembly. One could call the "body" alone" a cartridge with the stylus a separate item, but, I think for ease of understanding, at least here at AK, we've defined these terms as such. At least from my experiences here.
Regardless, let us know how it works out. And for future reference, if you like the MP-110, it is easily upgrade-able to to the better models by merely purchasing the better stylus down the road. So you have that going for you!

Sorry for the late response. But mostly thank you very much for taking the time to epxlain little more about the MP-110 Stylus cartidge. Since then I didn't have time to take care of my TD 145 but I think i'm gonna place my purchase of the MP-110 hoping that it will it well with my TD 145. Cuz just today someone else suggested me the Ortofon 2M Blue : https://www.amazon.ca/Ortofon-Blue-Moving-Magnet-Cartridge/dp/B001E0CK3K

Just want to make sure i'm buying a stylus cartridge thast will not only play well but will be musical.

Anyone tried both of these and compare?

Thanks and hope everyone is safe out there. Best

I purchased the MP-110H off of Amazon with the headshell. Now, understand I am easy to please.....but it is by far the most bang for my buck improvement I made to my system.
