What causes transformer hum?

Actually he didn't use varnish...... he used shellac. I doubt the proper stuff is shellac, but it probably works okay. You can get the proper stuff...... check with a motor shop, or McMaster-Car has it in a spray can, although, that probably wouldn't really be the best delivery system for a transformer.

Yup, I did an oopsie. Meant to get Varnish and grabbed Shellac instead. Said what the hell and tried it anyway. Turns out that Shellac never hardens like Varnish and will soften and probably melt at 150 degrees farenheit.

I have done 2 Marantz 2270 transformers and 3 Samson transformers used in my rack and so far after one year or so all is well and quiet. Hasn't melted yet though...
