What do I have here?

I purchased these speakers from an estate with several Velodyne woofers, quite a batch of BGW amplifiers and a horde of speaker drivers and crossovers. I guess I do not want to call these frankenstien speakers just yet. The previous owner had quite a collection of audio gear and seemed to be into speaker building and modifications. Notes on tested frequencies of drivers were everywhere. I think he was running many of the BGW amps bridged and many of the tweeters with an outboard crossover. I did not get to see the original set up but when I pulled them out most were interconnected. I believe most all the drivers are JBL and installed into Infinity RS 625 cabinets. So, I do not know if I have Frankenstien speakers or maybe some project that he copied that is a known good project. I myself am a speaker repair guy but have yet to get into design. I would appreciate any and all input. Thank you!

FWIW, the two cabinets in the upper left with the different woofer really makes me wonder what's going on. Assuming they're not passive radiators, it would be really difficult to design a single enclosure to use two different types of woofers. Someone who knows something about speaker design probably wouldn't do that.

WOW! And you have the room for all that?
All I can say is experiment time! Those bullet tweeters are worth some coin as well as the butt cheeks!
I can see a possible amazing surround sound setup there as well!
Have fun!

Unless the cabs were modded with separate chambers for each woofer. Have to see what’s going on inside.

I did not really have room for all that stuff! In total it was 12 car loads using a Volvo wagon. 2.5 days of work packing loading and unloading. Just too good of a deal to pass up on. Now trying to figure out what I have.

That's all garbage, just send it to me for proper disposal. :p

I haven't seen anything like this but OTOH I'm not well versed in JBL tinkering. But I sure would be glad to come across such a trove.

You may be more right than you think.

Most of the woofers and maybe cabinets appear to be from the lower end consumer product line. The woofers look like the lower end consumer subs.

Note the array of butt cheeks. It would seem that there are two different curvatures going on there, and that doesn't seem right.

Note the large butt cheeks on the right. I don't think these are JBL as I can't recall a size between the really big ones and those in the 4430s/4435s, and the shape doesn't quite look "JBL," but I could certainly be wrong.

There were other manufactures of "butt cheeks" with a similar appearance.

A friend of mine bought one pair of these. When he removed a driver he said it was JBL and very heavy. I will have to pull them apart and see what I have I guess. I am a little overwhelmed with the amount of stuff. Besides the speakers in the photos I am currently going through about 30 banana boxes full of drivers. There were more than 20 amplifiers and 7 very large Velodyne subwoofers amongst a good many other things.

Those drivers in the woofer holes, look to to be 2118H or 2118J midbass/midrange drivers. Same driver that went into the JBL Cabaret 4612 cabinets (the J version- 16 ohms). .

In fact, the 2404 "baby cheeks" horn tweeters, were also used in those.

It's almost like someone gutted a whole bunch of 4612s, and made some sort of weird array with the drivers...

Regards,
Gordon.

Thank you for responding. An array makes sense. These were mostly all connected together on one wall.

And those pictures don’t show all the single speakers that were laying around, most of which were JBL from 1 inch tweeters to 18 inch woofers.....along with at least 20 subwoofers, wires, speaker cabinets, computer speakers, boxes of crossovers, and parts.....overwhelming amount of stuff in this guys house. The few people that got inside this guys house all said the same thing while itching their head..... this is overwhelming!!!
