What Do You All Think?

I found this Admiral record player at the local flea market today. It's unique to me simply because it's a full size console with 6 speakers bit no radio. Does anyone out there have any knowledge of this particular model? The cabinet is in very rough shape. the tag on it said it works but I have my doubts. It can be had for a $20 bill I would think the amp along would be worth that. Anyway if anyone has suggestions on this please let me know.

Thanks,

I would take that in a heartbeat for that price and be very glad to have it. If nothing on it works including the tube amp, you can pull that and get double your money back on it without too much effort. If the tube amp works, then you can get more. Frankly, I love the look of that cabinet, so I'd be inclined to try to restore it, but that's just me.

Schematic is easy enough to find; it's in the 1961 Beitman's.
Standard single-ended 6BQ5 amp with 275VDC out of the rectifier. The tone control circuit does use couplates (PECs) so be forewarned, but the schem gives you the R and C values inside them.

Email me if you want the schematic (can't post pdfs here).

Looks like its got Amperex 6bq5 tubes, if I decipher the pics correctly. Worth 20 bucks no problem.

Rwood,

What is the small box that is in the upper left corner of the schematic? It has 1 input in and 1 out. I noticed this on the console when I was looking at it. Also did Admiral make there own speakers and record players?

I bought one of these consoles 12(?) years ago, same cabinet but mine had a radio (pretty crappy one, you're not missing much). Yours looks like it is stamped with a 1960 date, later than mine; different amp chassis, looks like same layout.

Nearly all the tubes were dead or very weak. Can caps had leaked from the vents. I didn't even bother to get the amp going; harvested the iron, added a 2.5v filament trans, and turned it into a VERY good SE45 amp. Good iron.

Total investment - $123. Took it to a club meeting and equaled a commercial SE45 amp.

Alas, my daughter's puppy chewed up the output transformers, I had it sitting on the floor by my workbench. My wife came home, he was carrying a 45 tube around the house.

Go buy it. NOW.

It looks like it's a Tuner input that opens up the phono circuit when a plug is inserted.

Not sure, but I doubt if they made either the speakers or the record changer. Speakers should be easy to tell from the codes on them, and the record player by photos from above and below. Post them when you can.

Schematic attached - not sure why I didn't think I could upload pdfs here.
