What do you think of this Thorens TD 125

Hi all,

I’m finally starting my gear upgrades and began by finding a fairly local Dynaco SCA-35 that is making its way to me shortly.

At the risk of posting this here and the seller is a member - wondering what thoughts are on this Thorens. It’s also local to me, which is rare in itself here in Canada.

Keep in mind the price is in CAD, so in USD that’s about $1300 with todays atrocious exchange rate.

Can’t talk price except in $&¢ forum. Also don’t know your market, whether higher or lower than the norm we see.
replacement bottom is good, don’t know about the rest.

hit the report button in your post ask a mod to move it, or they will if they find it. Then we can talk loonies.

Ha. I see what you did there with Loonies. Awesome. Asked mod to move.

I see what you did there with Loonies.
I remember when the toonie came back in 95 and some were calling it the american dollar. Sorry for the exchange rate.

As to the value of the 125, seems high as at that price I sold one with a separate tonearm and nice cartridge. But it was not upgraded.

If the unit has been recapped and with the solid bottom cover and feet and add in the location and you might be getting close to a fair deal. The 125 is a workhorse.

Since there are a lot of these out there, they don't really die, they can show up in tired shape for short money needing some work or in really nice shape with a different tonearm and cartridge for high dollars. What is near you and available does affect the price.

I would talk to the seller and see what is going on with how upgraded and restored it is and work him on the price. Might want to discuss the dound deadening he used and what the sonic difference was to him. Sometimes like with a platter mat on a different table a thick heavy mat deadened the sound for a bad effect.

Seems one on the bay in NY is about 750 but it is missing the dust cover and not upgraded. The hinges are 100 and the dust cover...I guess a replacement could be found freshly made for 200.

The price of these is getting higher it seems and if I wanted that machine it might be possible to rationalize the price...less a bit for showing up with cash money in hand. His ad does say $1800 Cash is King and that reads like drop by and make offer to me.

I have the Thorens TD-125 and it is excellent. It did not come with a tone arm, so I added one to it. Check that the TT you are looking at does come with an arm.

Thanks a ton for the info. This is sort of what I was initially thinking - ask about the upgrades to ensure they’re legit, and then see if I can get it for less.

Nice looking turntable, looks as though the seller knows his stuff. For the price I would expect a much nicer cartridge included, which was clued by the fact he sort of brags on how great it sounds instead of just a simple list of what it is. For that price I'd get a new Technics.

So I actually talked at length with the seller. He REALLY knows his stuff - he’s an aircraft mechanic / consultant who does this on the side. Has a large collection and this is one of many Thorens he’s done. Says that the big thing he does that most others don’t is the rewiring and tonearm bearings.

He acknowledged it should get a better cartridge, and came down on price. Was asking me a lot about my setup and helpful on a number of other points.

I am going to go with this partly just given he will be around to help if I need anything and wanted to connect me to other great technicians in my area.

Hey, I'm glad he agreed. I'm not a Grado fan and had to look up the price on the Black, which drew me to post what I stated. GL to ya Macdian, keep em spinnin'!!!
