What flavor of AR2's are these?

I started paying attention to AR about when the AR10pi and AR11 were available. I don't know the earlier ones well. It looks like they have original drivers. Is that a fabric screen on the mids?

A quick look online suggests the ones above are AR2-ax, and these are AR2...

Or not? And what are these...maybe AR2-hax :D ?

That 2ax in the first pic is an early one, when they were still using the cloth-surround woofer from the 2a. It was later replaced with a foam surround version, minus the damping ring. The earlier woofer is the better one, IMHO.

The veneer on them is relatively thick, so they can be sanded down and refinished (ideally with an oil finish, as original, vs the overly-shiny poly or varnish someone apparently added). I have sanded a number of the "classic" ARs using an orbital sander on the sides, top and bottom. You do have to be careful, because there's no repairing them if you go through into the particle board. I would recommend hand sanding for the face edges.

Yes, looks like original drivers, or at least original style. The screen is metal
w/fiberglass under it to tame the mids a bit.

The mids do not have a band-pass filter on them (a capacitor to allow HF thru, a coil to block HF (it needs to run form 2,000 cps to 7500cps). Needs to play at 2,000 cps and stop playing at 7500 cps. That is why they used mechanical means to limit the top end of the mid so that it would not play into the tweeter's frequencies, which would cause lobing {bad).

Get them at that price! Classicspeakerpages.net also has great details on these. A couple of things 1.) May need new level controls for the mids and tweeters 2.) may need the crossover caps replaced 3.) the woofer surrounds may need to be treated(sealed) RoyC has the correct liquid. 4.) some others but good luck.

Curious as to why you would recommend buying them? The cost to refurb plus purchase price will exceed their value, and sound-wise they can be pretty handily beat for what it would take to buy them and get them back to good condition.
