What genere do The Moody Blues fit in?

I'm quite certain no one is sure to whom it should be credited. (Rossini and Ellington are the two that seem to get sited most often). I think it may be lost to history. Doesn't matter though. It's a pretty universal truth and I'd bet it predates even Rossini's 1863 siting.

I was referring to the Townes VanZandt quote, but agree with you.

You will want to ignore this. :D

—and at some point it becomes easier to just use the band's name.

Fun with abstractions!

At some point you can't even use the band's name. All you can do is point at the speakers.

If you read the definitions of Art Rock and Progressive Rock found in Wikipedia you'll see that there's a lot of interchangeability between these 2 sub-genres. Interestingly you like both - ELO and MB are cited as Art Rock and PF & KC as Prog. ELP and Tull are mentioned in both. Reading on though they put Deep Purple in the Prog camp which leads back to the "world of hurt" part.

I like the Ian Gillan "Child in Time" side of Deep Purple. "Space Truckin" not so.

"Thick as a Brick" is favourable over "Aqualung". Just.

Personal top four of whatever the genre is (in no particular order):

Pink Floyd "Atom Heart Mother"
King Crimson "Red"
Moody Blues "On the Threshold of a Dream"
ELO "Eldorado"

Maybe due to the themed album style?

Wow! This thread got far more traction then expected. I was just curious, not looking to do a filing renovation. The Moody BLues is just one of those groups that morphed here or there and have a slightly different sound then most others. I've always filed them under classic rock.

Classic rock, prog rock, and psychedelic rock genres is/are where I place them. (But I love all the subgenre breakdowns and don't disagree at all).

It was a great question.

I will never admit this in public, but just to be clear, I place them in every category that has been mentioned for them in this thread. I like to be very definite and clear :D

When I first heard them when I was in college, I placed them in one category, now they have been moved several times and after moving into my new house late last fall, my music is still somewhat in disarray.

So to withmusic, thanks a lot. Do you know what a question like this this does to a super OCD person like me. Just think Monk of the TV series of the same name. :D

Just kidding, it was a great question as evidenced by all of the responses.

Uh, actually, I too hate to admit this, but I do know what your talking about. I am somewhat OCD (some of Monk's traits), for that I can thank this hobby.:D
for instance all my vinyl has to be in poly covers all facing with open end up while the records themselves must have the cover right side up.
I spent last night doing some revamping of my CD collection. (My vinyl collection in which the Moody Blues live, is small so it's just alphabetical and that's it). However, my CD collection is huge and has a little bit of sub-generes for easy filing and selection. Last night in my revamping to make more room for incoming CDs I am creating from the vinyl, I have one Moody Blues CD done so far and guess what. Since it is a double album of selections from some of their albums, I moved it in with the Progressive Rock catagory.:D
