This thread illustrates why I once posted the notion that genres did a whole lot more for the music business than they ever did for the music consumer. They were the precursors if business intelligence. If you like A, you'll like B. But the problem is it was good and fresh and original when A did it, but by the time B got there and did the same thing, it was trite and derivative. There are only two kinds of music: good music (fresh and original or innovative) and bad music (trite and derivative or stale).

Other: Smooth Jazz, vs Jazz/ swing much different! e.g. Benny Goodman vs Kenny G. Tom Scott vs Louis Armstrong. David Sanborn vs Charlie Parker etc.
Bundling all genre of jazz together is like bundling Count Basie with George Benson in one genre. Get the picture?

I lean toward music called Americana now days. Kind of a mix of folk, country and rock. Usually on lesser known streaming stations.
I can really listen to anything, except new pop and country music. Not too hip to rap either.

Which genre's of music do you enjoy mainly.
I know most of us are versitile for music choices, but what is your preferred types of music?

If you listen to opera, jazz, and classical mostly click them only please, don't check every box just because you have listened to them a little..lol
Just whatever you catch yourself playing by yourself when you are alone.

EM Space Ambient. Some examples, among many others :

Classical. But more and more classic rock--it was from my teenage years. There is something about it that just feel right to me. Maybe it is just what I have in my head.

lately? (ie: for about 7 years). this gets >90% of my listening these daze, the 2k vinyl collection, the ~500 cd collection, and the myriad assortment of analog fm tuners go mostly unused. great sound from the 192kbps channel, w/an internet tuner that has a dedicated digital out to feed a dac. so, i've been listening to pretty-much everything. even more so than normal. because they play literally everything. and then some. they have genre-specific feeds, but i like the mix... and if you're interested in something you've heard, the playlist is saved for 30 days.

Neo-prog (e.g. Spock's Beard, echolyn), prog-metal (e.g. Symphony X), classic prog (e.g. Yes, Pink Floyd, Gabriel era Genesis), Genre crossing weirdo stuff (e.g. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Gentle Giant, Cabezas de Cera), prog-adjacent (e.g. Muse)

I mainly listen to variations of psychedelia: Neopsych, dream pop, Post punk, post rock, downtempo electronica, trip-hop, shoe gaze, etc.

Nothing you ever listen to will ever sound like this on your audio system. You just can’t believe what you are listening to.View attachment 3622669
The Shaggs. So I got curious and gave it a download (one hour is legally allowed right?). Well.. It is a distinct quasi break-beat kind of sound indeed. The vocals, yes there are those. And you hit that drum ya bloody old-ah lady! Just like whatever. Might have been an inspiration for Beck and such perhaps? I was a bit disappointed that the "philosophy of the world" was limited to a greener grass on the other side note, but hey.

Now what genre are we talking?

Since this is a "revived thread", thought to look back on what I shared back then...and it's pretty much the same.

Mood tends to drive me to listen to certain genres, but I will stray into different types of music, but some of the newer material just don't do anything for me in the way of entertainment.

And to a degree, weather and the time of the year will get me favouring certain kinds of music.

i can relate to "pretty much the same", re: "revived thread" posts.

because i really like to "graze" and listen to a lot of different things, my mainstay is still fip.fr, as its eclectic feed plays everything. and then some. literally. (fip does have genre-specific feeds for pretty-much everything except classical, for those so inclined.)

and its higher bit rate feed, when fed from the digital out of an internet tuner into a dac, sounds superb. you can easily hear the difference between quality and not-so-quality recordings. my vast software collection usually sit idle, unless i'm in the mood for something specific. (which can occasionally get triggered by something i heard fip play.)

hi bitrate feed:

and yes, i have a pretty hi-rez set-up. ;)
