I have watched the NFL since a kid, but this coverup and denial of cheating by the NE Patriots is disgusting. All the celebration of a perfect season by the NFL and all the sportscasters is sending the wrong message to all of football down to College, H/S and PeeWee. The hall of fame has become the hall of shame! What a slander to all the great players and coaches.
Regretfully,
Jim

Like what?

I mean, they got caught, fined, and the league moved on.

What's the deal now?

Chargers fan? :tears:

They got caught and punished.

At some point, they've still got to show up and win games.

Other teams have been caught doing things during their seasons, what would you have them do - throw out all the results for any team or player that ever did anything wrong?

To me, this pales in comparison to what's going on in baseball.

bs

Apparently, they should rehash that they got caught every week throughout the season and put them on probation. No more scholarships for NE!

Is this your time of the month? The Patriots faced about as much punishment as could be expected. Fining a coach half a million is nearly unprecedented. Nothing has been denied and it's been in the media following the Pats for the past 19 weeks. The only other thing that could have been reasonably done would be suspend Belichick for a game or more. I wouldn't have disagreed with this, but I also can see how it could be excessive considering the infraction.

The level of known cheating has been dramatically overblown. The camera was discovered a few minutes into the start of the season, and it was not for use during that game. Additionally, it was only the location that was against the rules. Had he been in the stands or in an authorized camera location he could have taped all the signals he wanted to. IT HAD NO EFFECT ON THIS SEASON.

The camera was irrelevant. The Patriots still went undefeated.

The Patriots are a great Football Team, and the Giants played them well in the last regular season game. Should be a good Superbowl.
Why is anybody still complaining about this? Seems like the consensus in this thread so far. By the way, I was rooting for the Chargers, but decided to go out at the half. You could tell they were not going to win.

I don't keep up on football trivia much except to keep tabs on how the Patriots do in terms of wins and losses because they're here in New England. So all I know is that they went 18-0 this season.

So my first reaction to the OP's question is "A professional sports team was sloppy enough to actually get caught cheating??" Apparently it wasn't that big a deal because this is the first I've heard about it.

They got caught in week 1.
Jimmy

Just my read on it. Every other football organization be it College, High School, PeeWee forfiets the games involved, why not the Pros? Especially the Pros, they are who all younger players and coaches aspire to be! The Jimmy reference was uncalled for by the way, I was just making an observation.
Respectfully,
Jim

My coment was directed at the state of the the NFL, hence the title of the thread. Didn't mean to disparage the Patriots or their accomplishments, just a comment on the National Football League.
Apologies to anyone offended,
Jim

Actually a Redskins fan.
I agree with your comment on baseball.
Jim

Enjoy the SuperBowl !!

They were punished, but improperly. Half a million is pocket change to Bill Belichick.

The proper punishment for cheating is forfeiture of the game, at least. Pure and simple.

The guy who turned them in is a former employee. His need to expose cheating somehow never kicked in until he was on the receiving end. How odd.

Every team in the league does some form of this. Why do you think coaches cover there faces when they call a play? Could it be the lip readers other teams have on staff? As mentioned earlier if Belicheck was any good at this he would have had his guy in the stands vith a video camera. Perfectly legal then.

Besides the Bill fine, the Pats also lost a 1st round pick.
They broke a rule, they were punished. It has absolutely nothing to do with their season. Geeez... move on.

Perhaps, punishments were previously established and enforced based on the nature of the infraction, making it just? maybe?

18-0, 17-1 - doesn't really matter to me. I'd give up the win to get the draft pick back.
In the history of the league, has the NFL ever made a team forfeit a game for breaking a rule?
If not, then this must be the most serious rule breaking incident in the history of football, right? Hmmm...

It seems that the real issue here is that does anyone really think they would have lost to the Jets in week 1? Face it, they are 18-0, and in the Super Bowl. It feels like a lot of sour grapes out there. But the last time I stood up for the Pats I got "skewered" around here. Bottom line, enjoy the games, have fun. It's a sport for God's sake! It is not life and death. If you think it's so unfair, then stop watching it. Enjoy, I actually think it's going to be a great Super Bowl!
