What has surprised you the most?

similost

Rockin and Rollin....
What piece of gear have you bought that you figured you would give a whirl around the block just for grins, and then realized "WOW, this is freaking amazing. I had no idea it was this nice!", then ended up it being a daily driver?

For me, it is this new Technics SL-1200MKII I just got... I had NO CLUE they were half of what I've found it to be...

The thing that has surprised me the most is the money someone will spend on something to achieve a .005% improvement in sound. Or at least the perceived .005% improvement in sound.

My $5 Peavey CS-400 is coming very close...........as you have seen with my way too long thread.

Also, for a secondary system: Wharfedale W25's. Free. NI IDEA how natural they sound.

The pre outs on a receiver, didnt know they were so versitile! you can hook a sub up to em! never knew that! :thmbsp:

LOL.. Mark.. you are so right there... I can't say I'm too terribly guilty of that though. Most all of my upgrades have been a very large step up in sound quality.. and at fairly reasonable prices, but I must admit I don't have any of those $5 to $25 scores in my system.. yeah.. I got thousands :tears:

Edit: my last comment just made me add up what I paid for each piece that is in my system in use at the moment.. it doesn't include what is sitting in my basement and garage... OUCH!!!!! LOTS of thousands... I hope my wife never adds it up.. She knows what each piece cost me though... or close to it..

I'd have to say my KEFs. I found six boxed pairs on the floor at Tweeter one evening and thought, "Nah". Then I went home and picked up a Stereo Review equipment guide and went :yikes: when I read the specs and MSRP.
When I ran back the next morning, there were only two boxes left. I grabbed one of 'em without even auditioning them. I've never regretted it. :music:

:thmbsp:

My Pioneer HPM-900's suprise me every time I listen to them.

The pair of Minimus 7's that my dad had hooked up to an all in one system through 20 foot runs of 28 gauge speaker wire. We got rid of that all in one so I figured "what the heck, I will see what they sound like with a real receiver" and hooked them up and went :jawdrop:.
They toasted all my other speakers in terms of sound quality (not in terms of bass though). They are now my main speakers with another set of KLH 900B's hooked up for backup when I want to crank it.

thats what happened with my first one for $325 sim, hooked her up and was blown away! :yikes:

I'd have to say the Nad 2200. Just an ugly little gray amp that makes fabulous music. I really like it.

My Yamaha T-1 Tuner was a revelation in radio listening for me. Where should I go next from this $15 tuner? A $200 TU-717? I think I'm gonna hang tight with this tuner for a good long while.

I think my biggest surprise came from my Dynaco SCA-35 amplifier. I had it adjusted and retubed by Gold Aero and it turned out to be the sweetest sounding amplifier I ever had. It mated beautifully with my AR4x loudspeakers.

I got a pair of Mission 762i's at the Goodwill just because they were $12.00 for both $6 each and in very nice shape.I listened for 3 min.and made them my main speakers recaped the crossovers with high end caps and never looked back.

Biggest Surprise=Shock

I Know some will laugh:lmao:
Using a Playstation 1 as a CD transport,OK, laugh now.
I don't have big dollar gear, so can't compare it with the exotic stuff that I know most of you own.
It kicked the bum of the other CD players i have, a good honest unit.
