What I learned on Craigslist

I hope you don't still do this, Craigslist relay has solved the email problem. They never see your personal email address anymore, just the relay address and your relay address is unique for each ad.

Besides, it's much easier to just add a line "If this is up I still have it." And if you want to be really conclusive say "If I receive any emails asking if this is still available they will be treated as spam and deleted." If I ever see "Is this item still available?" I instantly delete, normal people don't say item when referring to something specific you're selling...

Yep. As a result, you can identify email harvesters by the fact that they ask you to reply to a real email address rather than via the CL relay.

A new wrinkle that I've noticed is a couple that included non-existent phone numbers, in an effort to appear more plausible.

Yeah I wont respond to email even though there is a #.I call the number.I am just a lot quicker to delete responses that don't appear legit.

I've learned that missing out on good deals due to something stupid makes me have no interest in Craigslist for several weeks. Just missed a Carver C4000 for $50 by maybe an hour. I'm done looking at Craigslist for at least a couple weeks.

Heh. Just had three messages like this within 1 minute of each other:

hi! still available? if so e mail me on [xxxxx@xxxxx.com]

rather trade but i will buy it from u if you are only looking to sell.
just be real though because i had my fair share of fake people.
today is sunday so rather pick it up today.

"still available?" WTF, they trying to hit on me?

Exact same message all three times, except different email addresses. They must have some automatic way to create email addresses. No way whatsoever to know what they are so hot to buy, except the CL linkback to the ad at the bottom of the message. I used the other link, for reporting, and flagged all three as scams. Because there were 'pics' I was supposed to DL attached to all three, and they could have contained malware....

Fake people indeed.

I just got in last week:
Luxman LE-109, T-117 and LV-117...$375

Seller is in Texas...Was from a Older Gentlemen that purchased these New. Contacted with Email and then Phoned. Did not have any issue with Shipping (I provided the Shipping Labels) and a Bank Check.

Smooth all the way with Nice Packing of units.

All I wanted was the LE-109 (Phone Amp)...This will be with LV-109..The T-117 Tuna is the Cherry.

"If you have any problems, just bring it back" means:

"I'm moving to New Mexico tomorrow. My real name is Bob."

Something a bit ironic about this guy's last name and what he's selling...

I learned that no matter how good you do your description, there will be a guy who will call you and ask exactly the same questions you have described in the post!

If it says NO REMOTE, don't call and ask if it comes with remote, you know the answer of your question already!

There may be some unformed hope that you were just holding back on the remote because you wanted to keep it or something, but if they let you know they want it, you'll be a sport and throw it in....

Some people's model of personal transactions is how they used to wheedle stuff out of their parents.

Don't forget the other line that's almost required with "I don't have the remote" is "You can buy a universal remote for $10 at Walmart and it will do everything". Thanks for telling me you not only don't have what I want, but that you also won't spend any effort to make something more desirable too...unless it's a $20 receiver, I'd say spending $10 so it has a remote would be worth it since most people buy AVRs and want the remote with them.

In my area there are three times as many people who want to buy vintage Mcintosh and Marantz tube audio as people who want to sell any home audio equipment.

OTOH, some remotes fetch decent money on fleabay. It's not inconceivable that an amateur seller who was uncomfortable with shipping heavy stuff might list a receiver on CL and the matching remote on the bay.

I'm selling this Ferrari because I got it as a birthday present but I already own one.

Good point actually. Who'd think that selling a receiver without the remote and then selling the remote on eBay would get you more money than just selling the receiver with a remote. I can actually think of one of mine that's probably worth $75-100 as a receiver, and the remote is going for $55 on eBay. Then again your price for the receiver would be less without the remote, so it might turn out the same difference.
