What I learned on Craigslist

If you can't afford something, that's ok - just ask for a free one and explicitly state you don't want to spend even a dollar on it

Classy.

There is this guy here who keeps posting ads for free r2r tapes, cassette tapes, blank, new, or used type ii. He won't pay, won't pick up, and wants you to deliver to him. Yeah sure.

4 FOUR HOLE 12" HATCHBACK SUBWOOFER/ with 1200 watt amp - $550

4 speaker in a box with a 1200 watt amp, very loud had to replace my windows twice

I'm sure the fact this guy had to replace the windows in his car twice is totally because those subs really "hit hard". Couldn't possibly be because he's probably spent more on all the audio in his car, than on the car itself...

On a sidenote, I really really really wish Craigslist would make a section for car audio. It's disappointing that about 50% or more of the listings in electronics are just car audio.

Had some douche offer me $5 to make a 60km round trip to sell a $60 item. No thanks, I deleted the add and put a buy it now on that auction site.

Saw a guy online yesterday, advertising some mega trash speakers as if they were something REAL special by saying "comes with a mid and a tweet too". Thanks, those will be a real step up from the dozens of woofer only speakers I've been listening to for years. Always knew I was missing out on something ..

Also the correlation between the quality of equipment and the term "audiophile" seems to be quite backward. In CL land the shittier the equipment, the more the word "audiophile" is used in the description. Conversely the nicer stuff hardly mentions the word at all. Getting real tiered of this.

I learned that if your $250.00 white van speakers haven't sold in the 10 months you've been listing them on CL, you raise the price and try again.

Yes, those sellers who are far more clever than we are. I saw a guy selling an old BGW amplifier that looked pretty rough for on the high end of the going rate. After it didn't sell for awhile, he raised the price even higher. Guess they think if the price is going up - maybe it will continue to appreciate in value?

I'm sure that's a totally successful selling strategy..."Hey, do you want to buy this car for $1,000? No? How about at $2,000? Great, we have a deal!" Because you know, if it was too cheap I might have thought something was up but now that it costs more it must be legit...

Yeah, would love to know how they get away with it. Craigslist jumps all over me if I'd even try and post a similarly worded ad in a different section, yet I see people like that guy post literally the identical ad constantly.

I'm ambivalent about some of the rules, in certain circumstances (like, if you live in a rural area and are selling something pretty high end, I don't see anything that wrong with maybe listing it in a couple of nearby big cities as well) but that takes the biscuit.

On the positive side, while I'm also ambivalent about Internet lynch mobs, that's as clear a justification for a mass flagging event as any I've seen.:thmbsp:

I HATE THAT GUY!!!! I see his ads all the time. He currently has 504 ads! Same items posted multiple times. I used to try and flag 'em, but just got tired. I wish there was some way to get rid of this guy. Here are all his ads:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/search/?sort=rel&areaID=7&subAreaID=&query=818-481-9723&catAbb=sss

Someone also posted a warning that he scams and sells stuff that doesn't work. He'll supposedly will meet you at a public place where you can't test speakers and you'll find out it doesn't work when you get home.

I'm just tired of seeing his ads repeatedly. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Good grief.
I feel the need for a Flag-a Thon Thread:scratch2:
This merchant needs to cease and desist from the CL abuse.

If you start it, we will come.

As I say, I'm ambivalent about Internet lynch mobs, but in this case you've provided sufficient and conclusive evidence, rather than the usual hearsay rubbish.

One thought - we should be careful not to flag any of his ads that comply with the rules - he needs to understand that it's his misbehaviour that is being targeted, not him and that where he plays by the rules he'll be left alone.

You can technically send in a complaint to Craigslist staff with all of his posting IDs. Supposedly in a case like this where he's clearly subverting their system that prevents overposting they'd probably do something to his account. I usually report excessive overposters but no idea if Craigslist staff is what stops them or if they just give up after being flagged constantly. I had a guy who posted that I was a scammer for some random reason that I never did figure out after listing a Luxman amplifier (And I didn't have my name, number, or identifying features in the photos for him to even know who I was). Reported him to Craigslist since he always posted after I'd top post my Luxman and I never saw him post again. Worth a shot if he's such a blatant offender.

Yes, this is quite compelling as far as something as this can be:)
I find it rather rudely freakish while others might find it "enterprising" that this merchant is so steadfast or overzealous in his postings.
I would love to send this guy a message.
Perhaps a thread is appropriate soon.

I believe this merchant circumvents the system by multiple email accounts and multiple daily roll-over ads.
Perhaps within the rules but definitely not kosher
