Yanno... I was intrigued by the "Open Baffle" discussion and I'm thinking maybe I could handle a DIY project. I know, that's a lot harder than it sounds, but what if....
I have three set's of KEF R107's. I have three individual speakers set up in my listening room (2 fronts and a single rear). All is good! But, what if I took the bases of two of the others and used them for the basis of an open baffle system?
I'm thinking that it is hard to beat the bass response of the Couple Cavity design of these things! So don't re-invent that element. Instead, try to improve the openness of the mid-range and high-end?
Now the objective would be to not damage or degrade the condition of the R107's (for possible resale), but to build around them? I was looking at the Linkwitz Orion and thinking to myself, what if this was designed to be free standing around the KEF Bass Box...
You could position the Mid Tweeter to be relative to the port coming out of the Base Box. I'd have to really think out how to handle the crossover, but you feed bass to the KEF Box and everything else goes to the Open Baffle System. In effect you have replaced the KEF R107 Heads with an Open Baffle unit...
How crazy am I? Thoughts? ...and yeah, I know, how much money do you have?
