What is causing my tonearm to be stuck?

Hi, I have a Technics SL-B270 turntable that I just got. When I lift the tone arm the turntable will start spinning but the tone arm will only move about 2 inches. I can’t set it down onto the spinning turntable. It’s as the arm is stuck at two inches. What is the issue? I know it’s been sitting a long time. I have a video but unable to upload it here.

Don't know the turntable per se but it's an automatic model so could it be that the automatic mechanism is jammed ? Likely nothing so tricky. Meaning to find out you would need to flip it over and access inside of it from its 'under-belly' side open to check. My 2 cents...
 
Timmy is right, the tonearm is connected to the automatic mechanism inside the base. Gotta get in there and investigate!
