What is the best piece of gear you ever received for FREE?

On the Run
What is the best piece of gear, receivers, amps, speakers, TT’s whatever, that you ever received for FREE?

By free I mean it cost $0, and it was useable when you got it. Not getting a busted piece and dumping $$ into it. Examples:

Someone gave it to you. (Friend acquaintance, stranger, whoever)

You picked it up on the curb.

Dumpster diving.

You bought a setup, and sold all except the piece you really wanted,

Bottom line you got the item for no money out of pocket, and no trades or barter.

Mine is probably the B&W DM110 Speakers with the M&K V-2B Powered Subwoofer running a close second. The sub has since had an amp problem, but the B&K’s are in my oldest daughter’s setup.

Sansui 2000x or Pioneer SX-737. Both just needed a good cleaning and voltage adjustments to be functionally perfect and cosmetically very good. What some people will throw away.....

I know it's not gear, but I'm proud of my free record collection. I put an ad out on my company's website asking for LP's and someone straight up gave me their entire 100+ collection. He was an engineer all the way. The collection was in alphabetical order and meticulously kept. Almost complete Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen catalogs, along with many other greats.

Sorry for digressing.

yamaha ca-1010 off of craigslist in mint condition in the box w/ manuals and schematic completely free along with an adcom tuner. sold it to help pay for my vmps speakers and still miss it.

Either my Luxman r-1050, or my Coral BX-1500's.

Lux was a dumpster-find, the Coral's were free after I sold gear that went w/them.

:)

Oy veh.
Happens to me every day....NOT
I got an Eico HF85 in a dumpster.
Got free mil spec tubes from Vanderbilt's engineering department.

My neighbor gave me their dad's Marantz 2270 with wooden case, two Pioneer CS-63DX speakers, and a Sony TC-WE305 cassette deck (sold since then) at their estate sale. They were really nice! :music:

I got really lucky about 8 years ago. I had a very wealthy friend that had a Krell KSA preamp and an Audio Research VT-60 in his office. I helped him put the system together and after a year, he didn't like the heat from the tubes anymore, so he bought a little all in one system from Costco.

I asked him what he was going to do with it and he said "Why don't you take it, none of my freinds are into audio..."

No kidding!

I was given a Yamaha CR-1020, a Set of Magnapan MG-1's for free in one fell swoop. The boss's secretary needed help moving, she did not want all that "junk" anymore and told me to throw it out....Sure....I threw it out alright, right into that blue trash bin with wheels that has "Subaru" on the side.

Things have never been the same ever since!

 :music:    :D  :thmbsp:  :smoke:  :huge: :nerd: :guitar:

I picked up a very old pair of H.H. Scott speakers today. Well technically, they cost $1 because he was a dollar short to make change for me on the $5 Baby Advents I was buying, and I told him not to worry about it.

My uncle gave me a Pioneer PL-516 turntable for free with a very, very expensive cartridge (as I found out when I was quoted $250 for a replacement). I'm trying to give it away right now, but people keep falling through on picking it up.

I traded a BPC all-in-one system to my ex-gf for a nice pair of Boston Acoustics A40s that belonged to her father.

Hmm, what else. :scratch2:

My dad gave me his '79 Klipsch Cornwall 3-way horn loudspeakers when my folks moved to CT (no room for them in their small townhouse). They're now modded into a biamped and active 2-way design with Altec 511B horns and used in my brother's audio/HT setup!:thmbsp:

A work aquaintence gave me a free early '60s H.H. Scott 370-B wideband FM MPX stereo tube tuner in very nice condition (needed restoration but still worked). He bought it years before in hopes of restoring it himself, but never had the time. I thought about keeping it, but I really don't listen to the radio anymore. So I sold it on eBay and its new owner in Paris, France will restore it and add it to his Scott collection!:tresbon:

Coworker friend of mine moved in with his fiance leaving me the Sansui TU-919, AU-417, and SE-7 because there was no room in the new place. Also received my dads Sansui QRX-777 and SP-3500's...

That is actually what got me into this hobby and forum!

Without any doubt in my mind, AR90s. Too bad one is missing the side woofer cover, I guess I could use the other and replicate it.
