What is the difference between Technics 1200-1900 series?

I'll throw in that the 1600/1700/1800 have the same motor, platter, and tonearm as the 1200 and that in all regards the 1300/1400/1500 are a little less robust. They're all pretty good tables, though.

I've got a 1600 that I love to death. It's got me completely sold on full auto.
 
I have a Luxman L-430 it has phono preamps for MC and MM cartridges but you switch between them it doesn't have separate inputs.

A Technics Sl-20 and a Dual 604, so happened that we have two LP copies of Tim Buckley's "Sefonia".

I have a (newly acquired) Luxman L-410 in my basement room that I was going to use to do this.

I knew from your sig that you have a Luxman, hence the question.

Yours is practically the same as mine just a little less power, 75wpc compared to 105wpc. And these are real watts not the phony ones they quote today. The Luxman has such a sweet sound I love mine.
 
While we're at it, what's the difference between say, a Technics SL-1600 and an SL-1650? I'm seeing a few SL-XX50 models on eBay, and I'm wondering what the differences are...
 
Oh, and one more random thing. On a full auto turntable, can you still use it as a semi-auto if you don't just want to start it at the beginning of the album?

The xx50 models usually denote a model that can be used as a stackable changer. Or single play if you wish. I recommend the latter.

Gahhhh, I think I've narrowed it down to either a 1600 or a 1700, but there aren't any on eBay/Craigslist right now. Eh, I guess I'll just have to wait. Thanks for all the help guys!
 
There sl-d2 and sl-20 that I would be happy with, because I could then put more into the cartridge.
The differences in the spec(s) between the work horses like the sl-d20 and the 1600's are just spec to some one like me.
The harmonic and sound differences in cartridges are more apparent to me, hard to explain.
There may even be a reliability difference, but I could buy ten used SL-20 to one used SL-1600.
I speak heresy.:D
