what is the most "misleading" things you have heard about HiFi's??

Ebay ad for NHT SuperOnes claiming they were in "good condition."

Later, after purchase: "I DIDN'T SAY THEY CAME WITH TWEETERS!"

I love it when when you see an old pair of acoustic suspension speakers on ebay with rotted out woofer foam and the seller goes on and on about the wonderful sound they make!

Ya, some even say "it doesn't affect the sound".

"If you own this amp, women will want to have sex with you".

I fall for this every time, and it has yet to pan out.

If previously mentioned, sorry.
The clueless sellers who list the power consumption from the rear label as the power output of the item.

Yeah, I see that all the time and it really bugs me too. There's a local craigslist seller around here who usually has some interesting pieces listed, but as soon as I see the power consumption rating listed as the output power rating I loose all interest in dealing with him. If he's that ignorant about the equipment then I doubt if he even knows whether it works properly or not.

these are 100 Watt speakers. there is no rating like that. there should be a minimum power suggestion, or in the case of quad 57s, a maximum power rating.

power handling is another matter. some speakers can be driven without much fear to VERY loud levels. on the other hand, a more powerful amp is less likely to damage your speakers with a loud signal as the waveform wont be clipped and sending square waves through your voice coils.

nope, I won't either...I guess it is like talking about your mother in law before sex:nono:

Here's a good one. (Hopefully it hasn't been mentioned in this thread.)

How about when someone relates the position of a volume control knob with how much power an amp has or is delivering. "Gee.. this amp got really loud with the volume control only 1/3 of the way up. It must be a really powerful amp."

People assume that a volume control 1/2 of its travel will be delivering 1/2 of it's power capacity. As I recall from tech school most volume controls have logarithmic windings so it gets most of its gain in the first 1/3 of rotation. An amp running with 1/3 to 1/2 of its volume setting could easily be tapped out near clipping. It also does not take into consideration the level of the line input.

I always cringe when I see someone make a statement along that line.

2000 watt car amp or even home amp ..oh yeh pull the other one no way

I don't get it?

Not sure what is the current state of affairs in car audio, but it's pretty easy to find amps that work in the home that easily exceed 2,000 watts. And I'm not talking Technical Pro Blue Ice amps or whatever. I'm talking the real deal.

Isn't it amazing how EVERYTHING was lightly used, in a smoke free, pet free home.

I bet they cook in there, though. Cooking's not worse than smoking as far as grunge goes, but it will leave a film of funk even if you run the vent hood. I don't think I've ever bought any used gear that I couldn't coax a little gunk off of.
