what is the rarest Mcintosh piece

One of the audio mags reviewed the MC3500 back in the day and it put out over 500 watts. The amps in the rack with the hammertone gray finish have me stumped. The early MI stuff, MI60, 75 and 200 were finished this way, but I do not recognize the model.

Thanks,
Ron-C

Rare McIntosh

How about one of these?? This is a McIntosh AA2 Acoustic Analyzer- still in the original box!! Includes the calibrated microphone hidden in a compartment in the lid. Works perfectly- just has some residue from the rubber gasket in the lid that I have to clean off. Just got this yesterday evening in the buyout of a long closed retail and repair shop along with a van load of other goodies!!

Main: CAT pre, Quicksilver M135s, Quad 989s, VPI TNT-II, CAL Delta/Sigma-II, Technics RS-1500
BR: MAC C20, MC60s, Thorens 124, Harbeth Compact 7s, Rega Planet, Tandberg TD-20A
Den- GFs system: Golden Tube Audio SI-50 mk II; Roksan Kandy; Linn LP12/Ekos; Duntech PCL-15 Dutchess

Not as rare as you think, at one time most every dealer that did McIntosh installations had one. The problem is they came with a calibrated microphone and a good portion of them were missing after a few years, making them not worth much.

looks awesome! , I'd love to get one!!

Back from the dead as an MC100 just made an appearance on that auction site . . . someone here snag it!

I think my ML-2M floor model speakers are fairly rare. I certainly haven't seen another pair.

How about the concept image of ML-2C speakers rearranged into a tower?

They're one of a kind. :dunno:

There is a person here in Phoenix selling a McIntosh set who has repeatedly listed an MR 79 in his CL ad. I emailed but never got a reply, and I have too many tuners already...

...but for the right price I assume we'd make room for the holy grail of McIntosh tuners, the MR 79? :D

(Gotta be a typo anyway)

It's a $6000 set, I don't have the time or the capital to buy the package! It would make more sense for me to buy an MPI-4. Speaking of rare packages, one of the McIntosh founders retired in Tucson and somebody was selling that set on Audiogon. Last year, too late to re-find the listings. I think the MI-2, MI-3 and MPI-4 are pretty rare.

I recently came across the Mcintosh mcp-1 moving coil phono preamplifer on Roger Russell's website and knew as soon as I saw it I had to have one. after asking around I am finding that this is an extremely rare piece. This got me thinking about rare Mcintosh and wondering what was the rarest of the rare? what are the mythical beast of the mcintosh world, the pieces you have read about but have never seen in real life? pics(proof) would be nice if you can find them, thanks for playing.

Hello !

Sorry guys ! but I know one of the rarest .....MR79 ! I saw one a long time ago at the factory and it was not allowed to take picture ...Of course !

Another one is the MR81 : I saw one at the home of the president of the factory in mint condition . Another one was at Audioclassics but I don't know if they still have it ....

What do you think about that ? :thmbsp:

There was a MC 2100E, MC50 E and 2300E designed to drive 70.7 volt distribution loudspeaker systems, with a built in roll off, and with output transformers, not autoformers. Those are rare. I used to drive 70.7 volt lines directly with the 2300 using the 16 ohm output. Of course the line wasn't balanced or isolated from Ground like with the 2300 E or original MC275, 240, 75, 60, 40 or 30. .

No looks, more like the digital local area tuners in the Mac4200 and mac4300, spread the cost out like they did with the mac4100 tuner.....it was not a DXer like a mr80.
