What is this tool?

Was going through an old friend’s set of tools and gadgets and this looked interesting, but I don’t know what it does or it’s intended purpose.

It has a plunger on one end and if you depress it, a probe comes out of the other end. No hole in the end of the probe, nor is it sharp.

Does anyone know what this is used for?

Thanks.

Exactly! It threads into a hole in the shutter button . The 'probe' trips the shutter release internally. Usually used with a tripod for show shutter speeds to prevent blurring from vibrations.
There should be a knob on the plunger end to lock it for really long exposures.
