What Model Tascam/ Teac Cassette deck is best for home use?

I am currently using a Sony TCK C677ES but I would rather have a Teac/Tascam pro unit. The Sony has had it's share of issues over the years and I am tired of having to have new motors and mechanisms replaced every few years. They are costly, and take a lot of time to have serviced. While the sound is excellent with separate bias and eq knobs, HX Pro and all of the home Dolby settings, and bells and whistles on board I grow tired of the reliability issues.

It seems like older decks or more pro oriented decks have less non user serviceable problems. At least thats what I am getting out of my research.

I don't need any Dragons or any thing exotic, just a great single well deck for home-semi pro use.:thmbsp:

Any recommendations anyone? I don't want to pay a lot for a used deck, but I want a good one. Again, I have read nice things about the Tascams; example model 122 version's 2 or 3.

Thanks for any and all input! :thmbsp:

Peace,

Phil

That would be a good choice. But why limit yourself to a Tascam? Just brand loyalty? Certainly these are built to last, but IMO the sound quality is inferior to a good Nak.

If you want bulletproof: Get yourself a Revox B-215. It features 4 direct drive motors, and has no belts or rollers to fail, and it will sound better than the Tascam. And once it is recapped, it will run perfectly for many years.

Teac C-3X any good? I know it's "only" single-capstan while the C-1 had dual (don't know about the C-2) but I picked one up recently and I have to say, Build Quality City!

I think the Teac C3X was basically just a Tascam 122 mk 1. Least, they look exactly alike from the pictures i've seen.

Mechanically speaking, even better in reliability and build quality. Harder to find but high on my list of better Non-Nakamichi, Non Tandberg, and non Studer-ReVox decks. Recommended in nice shape. :tresbon:
