What music do designers use to voice their devices?

I love these videos were the company PR guy interviews the engineers about the products they design. He asks what music they use to check the voicing of the product in development.

The L-507Z amp guys are my kind of dudes! I'll have to check out "Dido."

One of the young engineers working on the M-10 power amp, complained that the hardest part of the job was man-handling the 100 lb amp to continually swap components on the bottom. His older boss uses hi-res classical piano.

How about other brands?

This has been a running theme with Luxman since the 70s, testing their gear to get the sound they want. I'm sure others do it too but not every manufacturer is looking to voice their gear the same across the line which Luxman seemed to do to an extent. Can't make a 30 wpc receiver sound the same as a 100 wpc preamp, power amp and tuner combo but you can try. Their use of a prepared sound room was part of the sales talk from them to the dealers back in the day. I have an Alice Sara Ott but it is not the one they show in the video. The one they show was released this year, 2022, based on hunting for it and not seeing it on discogs but listed as currently unavailable from amazon. Again, I have a Dido but not that one.

As to what do folks listen to and more importantly, what do they listen for, have you checked out Jim Smith's Get Better Sound book? It has a few pages of recommendations about 180 discs. With the 200+ topics about getting better sound! it is well worth the cost of admission to learn about setting up the rig for best performance.

I think it comes down to finding some music you enjoy listening to that has some distinctive attributes such as mentioned in the video that provide an opportunity for you to hear the differences on different gear. Having just quickly reviewed Jim's list he is looking for CDs that provide the enjoyment of the emotion of the performance, not necessarily the clean, soulless performance. Something you can enjoy when heard on a well set up system.

Where is that thread about same brand gear...take all the audio crap in my house and set me up with a couple piles of modern Luxman.
