What reaction do you receive when people first see and/or hear your system?

I'm curious:
What reaction do you get when a new friend or stranger sees or hears your set-up for the first time?

Recently, an appliance repair technician worked in our home. He glanced at my audio set-up as he walked by, looked at me and said "Yeah, I had a record player when I was a kid." :D

Once had a family member hear it from a different room (family party) and comment, "sounds like a nice system in there". That's it. No follow up like, "can I see/hear it from the same room", etc. :dunno:

Comments I've gotten range from "Well, well...what to we have here?" to "Awesome system! Can we listen to it?" to "I'm coming over for movie night." to absolutely no comments at all. Those are the clueless ones I believe. ;)

Good call, I'm sure they appreciate that.

I'm mostly into discrete black equipment and I prefer it to be heard. Reactions are often enthusiastic as most people haven't heard good audio in many years. Or at all if they're millenials. Then they haven't heard good music either.

I'm 65. Plenty of good new music. Get tired of listening to just my old stuff.

The wives: "Are those speakers big enough?" (Summits).
My neighbor is a magnet school for music principle. He brings his students over to hear jazz on my system. They look at record on turntable, "Where's the music coming from?"
It's not the tube amps or the turntables, it's the big JBL's that people notice, being familiar with the name I guess.

I discovered many years ago no one will come steal your stuff while you are away if they don't know it's there.

Yeah, I trust my friends but you never know who they talk to. When I say I cover my junk up, I mean that all my gear tends to stay out of view, except the real junk no one would be interested in.
There's a lot of dirt bikes around me getting stolen from their owner's houses and garages. Brazen robberies. The thieves have no connection to the owners, but they knew the bikes were there. So logic tells me the less people know the less chance of getting ripped off.
I'll show my gear off to people I know from here. I'm not going to advertise my system on the bottom of my posts, despite being "anonymous".

Exactly I am not so concerned about the people I know but as you said the ones they may talk to concern me, with the price of things the way they are with vintage gear it does not take a room full to equal a few hundred k heck just one Marantz 2600 is worth more then most bank robberies net and a whole lot less risk for a thief. Like you no one will never see a list of gear in my Sig.

I keep my equipment covered up because I have several cats so most people don't really notice it.

My neighbor hates it as he is always complaining about loud music coming from my house.

I have never had anyone remark on my system ever, even when it is playing. My living room system is an SX-1250, and an SX-1280 driving DCM TF600s topping Klipsch Quartets. It sounds like heaven when it is playing and yet no one notices or says anything. At least I won't suspect anyone of stealing my stuff.

Take it from someone who has had their back door kicked-in (2010) and had their home ransacked...I don't try to "show off" my stuff anymore. In fact, I doubt that more than 3 or 4 people know what I have in the house. I suspected EVERYONE for a long time.
