Just found an oddity in my collection that I'd overlooked for years, "Bobby Vee Meets the Crickets" (63 mono).
It's dated with Vee trying to mimic Holly, coming close at times, but his voice is just too thin to carry it off. Holly's voice was high as it was.
The arrangements are set up with the Vee being spotlighted with The Crickets seeming like they are singing in the back room. Guess Bobby want to make certain that he was front and centre being the main deal on this LP.
The style is reminiscent of the late 50's, early 60's with just the four of the players doing their thing with drums taking a back seat. As mentioned, Vee captures the Holly sound with hic ups included, but not overdone as some entertainers tend to do. He dips into some Bo Diddley, Everly, Elvis, and Berry repertoire for material, doing well on some, while others were poorly covered. He needs to stay with the ballads.
With the record being a 4 outta 5 in cond, it can hold its own without the wall of music that came later, wherein the lead gets lost in the total sound.
