I wanted to get your opinions on what speakers to mate with my MC252. I am a new Audio Karma member, so be gentle with me
I use a pair of old DJ mixers for my preamp. I have a 35yr old Bozak CMA-10-2DL mixer (recently recapped, discrete circuitry and a big fat sound) and a 30yr old Urei 1620 (recapped, uses IC chips and has a punchy sound perfect for dance music). I have them connected to a patch bay and route my turntables and various components through it. I use the mixer/pre that suits my mood that day. Heh. It appears my preamp choices are a little unconventional based on what I have read in the forum, but I love electronic music, classic house, old disco music and the sound I get from the mixers are quite unique and appealing to me.
My current speakers are a pair of Paradigm Monitor 7 v3's. Before I got my MC252, I had them connected to a Denon DRA-687 receiver. I also route audio from my computer (mostly FLAC files) through an RME Fireface 400.
The Bozak sounds lovely through the McIntosh amp - bass is round and warm and mids'/highs are sweet. However, the Urei now has a totally different character when running through the MC252. The bass is not as punchy and the edge is gone. The Urei 1620 sounded just right with the Denon DRA-687 amp but is a bit too "polite" when run through the MC252.
I want to hold onto the MC252 because I think it is perfect for computer audio (takes that edge right off!) and the Bozak, but I want to be able to get the punch back into my Urei. I was considering keeping my Denon amp attached to the Urei and getting a speaker switch, but perhaps I can solve the problem with a better pair of speakers?
I would love to hear your opinions and experience. If there are any other Urei/Bozak users out here, please let me know what you think.
