flipping channels this morning and saw some NBC yahoo riding along during a slow lap of the track for a Street race this weekend in Chicago! I was at the 1st 2 Gran Prix F1 races on the streets of Detroit (Gran Prix in the Motor City, my crowd of friends all said hell yes!), so tho I'm not a NASCAR fan, I'll at least DVR this race and check it out. Grant Park looks like a pretty area with parks, trees and the lake nearby ... Looks like it would be a hoot - NASCARChicago.com

Oh, looks like USA and NBC has it

I’ll be watching. That’s a pretty good length straight, Easily a 160mph run, Probably will be very similar to a TRANSAM race

I'm expecting a pretty dull parade until the frantic kamikaze final 2 or 3 laps. Rain is expected and will just make survival the overall goal of the majority of teams if it comes. That usually results in a boring race. Kind of like F1.

Count me in. For me, in the summer, Lake Shore Drive is one of the most scenic drives in the Midwest. In the 60's and 70's I looked forward to my families annual trips to Wrigley Field and was never disappointed. We never ventured to Grant Park, Michigan Avenue or Navy Pear until I started taking my family for daily or weekend trips to Chicago. Not a big large city fan but Chicago is "My Kind of Town", at least for visiting.

Not sure how the racing will go but that's why they have the race. Hope the weather holds out.

Some of the racing is Sat afternoon on USA Network, and some is sunday evening on NBC.

An idiotic and shameful misuse of the public streets and parks. I also get pissed when the city allows profit making music fests to take over city parks. When I lived at 14th and Michigan I couldn't use Grant Park when the Lalapalooza assholes put a fence around the park doing their business. The parks should belong to the people of the city, not business people.

Couldn't disagree more. A Get Off my Lawn rant only it's not your yard. If the concerts weren't popular with the people they wouldn't survive. The Nascar street race has a 3 year contract with Chicago. Be a pretty boring city without special events.

I'm in Chicago this weekend and the next week - flew in from Brussels. The weather is crazy. I'd liked to have seen some of the action but it's really bad out there...

It used to be my yard and will be again. Some neighborhoods aren't happy with festivals in their neighborhood parks aimed at outsiders. I was born and raised in Chicago (West Side Irish), lived there much of my adult life and was never bored. You just don't know the good joints. ;-)

block parties are all the festivals I ever needed!! Born and raised in chicago (North Side Jew). These stupid festivals are for City of Chicago to pull more touristas in and also the suburbanites!

Grew up 2 hours from Chicago so trips were a few times a year. Block parties are great we use to have them and most cites and towns do but thinking a city like Chicago shouldn't have festivals is ridiculous. Chicago needs them to help polish their image and that's desperately needed. Doesn't really matter protesting here it just postering and won't stop an event from happening. Maybe they should call off the Air Show and 4th of July. Drag Halloween is a hoot.

Key word here is I
block parties are all the festivals I ever needed!!
