What to buy at Radio Shack

The next quality item RS carries will be the first. Good riddance.
Sounds like our Jaycar down here, I have tossed out two battery chargers and half a dozen SLA batteries over a 12 month period, and non was used heavily the chargers developed faults after 5 or 6 uses!

We had a couple of chains in the vain of RS down here, Dick Smith and Tandy, I think Woolworth bought both, so Tandy just quietly disappeared and DS has turned into a computer/mobile phone sales outlet.

Tandy is the parent corporation of Radio Shack. Also owned a chain of leather-hobbyist stores, which is amazingly still in business.

The only thing I could use are some soldering tips. I bought a Rat Shack 40 watt soldering iron a few years back, but the tips are so cheap they actually melt. After a project or two I always have to replace the tip.

I've spent way more on tips than I did for the soldering iron. Cheap Radio Shack junk. :thumbsdn: The next one is going to be a Weller.
Classic situation of false economy, I have been down that path too.

That reminds me :scratch2: I need to invest in a good soldering station :thmbsp:

Radio Shack decided to drop their own brand Realistic then they stopped selling parts. At one point it was fun to visit Radio Shack even if it meant just some batteries on that visit, maybe the next time it would be a set of speakers. Somewhere along the way they became just another store with exactly the same stuff as everyone else and no parts so less reason to visit one. R.I.P.

I'm looking for a soldering station/iron, basically want to make small harmonica/guitar amplifiers for musicians in my area.. What would you recommend?

They spun off the leather business nearly 40 years ago. Tandy is not the parent of Radio Shack and has not been for 20 years.

I got a Parts Express catalog not too long ago, and they were selling Radio Shack wall warts (power supplies)

Guess we know who's buying up their stock now...

Stopped by the RS in Chapel Hill today and everything was 40-70% off. Grabbed a few odds and ends, meant to grab DeOxit but forgot :(

Best deal I saw was Extech multimeters for 50% off. Regretfully, I didn't need one. All the resistors, caps, etc., in the drawers were 70% off.

Store personnel were nice about advising customers that items could not be returned.

Just stopped by the RS store near work.

Nothing is on sale. You wouldn't know anything was up.:dunno:

I'll try the one near home later...

Maybe the one near your work is one of the stores that stays open so no sales at that store. :scratch2:

Yesterday I went to one of the local Radio Shacks that is getting the axe. I bought a pair of wire strippers for half off.

The nicest thing in the store was the cute girl that worked there. I may have to go back and pretend to look for more clearance deals. :D

You are showing your age there!!!!

I bought some DeOxit Red and Gold. Are there any deals on soldering gear/supplies? I have none and want to get my feet wet, on the cheap natcherally..

Now that the shack is bankrupt what will be the best grabs? On a sad note what is going on the retail world? All these huge chains dropping like fly, I am sure you guys heard how Target failed here in Canada not even 2 years after they started.....

TARGET?
Try maybe Canadians thought they would get Americans Prices same as going to the States! Nope!:)

R/S has been basically dead here for 20-30 years already.Any real buying Stereos and such that I ever did was from back then and when the last few stores were still here small sundry items was mainly the norm:)

Target's Canadian expansion was poorly conceived from the start.

A couple of interesting RS items I picked up for $5 each were two water sensor alarms.

Runs on batteries and I'll be using one behind my washer to detect a leaking hose and perhaps one near the dishwasher or under my house.

The Sprint store deal has been a part of the RS Bankruptcy talk for quite some time now. As a side note Sprint is now majority owned by Softbank, a Japanese company, and is in the middle of reorganizing and redefining itself because of lost market share.

It may be that Radio Shack remnant will be going from the proverbial "Frying Pan" into the "Fire".
