No offense to anyone. I am, by nature, a lumper not a splitter. The AU-D11II, X901, and X911DG were the earliest high end X-balanced Sansuis available on the international market. The true alpha series came later, were all X balanced and I believe (I admit I can be wrong) that the designation alpha was chosen because of its similarity to the letter X perhaps to distinguish them from non X balanced amplifiers like the X1 or X11. I was using “later alpha” in both the literal sense that the alphas were later and in the sense that X balanced and alpha are almost synonymous.
If you look at the time line of amplifiers on the domestic versus international page on the Best of Sansui website you will see that the X911 (X777DG) and the domestic X999DG are characterized not as being in the AU- (7)07 lineage or the alpha lineage but in the “one number three digit series”. Interestingly (at least to me) if you look at audio-database.com (which I believe is audio-heritage.jp or something like that). You will find the X777DG and the 999DG listed together (appropriately enough) but at the end not with the 07s or alphas per se but near the X1 and similar “unique” amplifiers with designation AU alpha 777DG and AU-alpha 999DG.
As rose by any other name…
Cheers.
