What To Do With Damaged 2238B Dial Scale?

A couple weeks ago I read the thread about the guy who has the 2500 and turned his dial scale from a brush nickel finish to black.

I was intrigued and figured that it might be possible to do the same with any of the dial scales with a similar finish. I followed the same process in the thread above and was able to remove some of the finish, but only to realize that the undercoating is purple and almost the same color as the dial scale. I also noticed that the Stereo lettering is determined by where the brush nickel finish is applied on the dial.

So in a nutshell, I ruined my dial scale to an extent. I'm not really sure what to do with it now. I was thinking...maybe there is a way that I could put some sort of protective coating on the scale, like tape, then trace out the lettering, numbers, dots, etc, then remove the coating only to leave protection on where the lettering, numbering, etc is. Then I could paint the dial black, remove the protective layer, and have a new black dial.

Unfortunately right now I smudged off some of the Stereo lettering. What do you think I should do? I feel bad throwing it away.

That's a good idea. I am looking into it.

In the meantime, I acquired what I thought was another 2238B dial scale, but it looks to be a 2226B because there is no DLB-1 etching. What's interesting is that this one is all black on the back and even had diffuser paper on it, which I've never seen on a brush nickel dial scale. I got this scale for really cheap because there are a couple blemishes on it. I'm considering trying the same thing for this one but I'm still not sure about it. I'm afraid that taking away the brush nickel finish will once again erase the lettering / numbering. Is there any way to tell if the lettering / numbering is embedded through the depth of the scale, or if it is just etched into the finish?
